Been to a job today to fit a new dimmer switch to bedroom lights. Turn off all MCB's marked up for lighting and start to remove switch to check its dead and then replace it. As I remove the switch from the wall one of the wires falls out of its terminal and shorts to earth wire. small flash and a little smoke. so test the wiring and its now dead. go to consumer unit to find the 16A MCB marked garage has tripped.

Check the wiring to switch and find its 3 core and earth with the black core cut back and left, earth wire goes to earth terminal and brown goes to common and grey to L1.

fit new switch and switch back on all mcb's.

test wiring at back of switch and its still dead.

I am thinking that these lghts must be run off a fused spur from garage circuit but can I find it? Customer has no idea where it might be. Any suggestions? Am I right in my thoughts I thought that such spurs were supposed to be acessible.

Thats a good answer Apache, but on a three core with a cut"black" I would suspect no neutral at the switch. Looks like a repair job and will be located in the roof or joist space above.

However just check like Apache says there may be a borrowed neutral.

Just check for voltage across both cables and seperately to earth.

When fault finding always go from one end step by step, do not assume, saves loads of time in the end.Method over madness!

re apaches comment, can't determine that, all the power is switched on but none of it gets to the switch. I tink the wires at the switch are just a switched live and there is a FCU somewhere that the fuse has blown in. Customer does know of any, spoke to builder who says lights may very well be on a fused spur as that is one of the methods they use, he even suggests it might be in the 'void' which can be accessed thro 2 access panels. however customer says we don't have access panels - didn't want them. customer is to speak to builder again to see if they can trace any plans etc. Ahhh don't you just love this job.

Patch at least your animals normally have their bits in similar places all the time;)
