The kids shut down the desktop pc  last night, I've just tried to start it up & it's having none of it.

  1. The green LED on the rear is on.
  2. Push the on/off button LED goes out.
  3. Push & hold on/off button LED comes on.
  4. Pull the 24 way connector off the mother board LED stays on.
  5. Push the power button LED goes off but the mother board spins for 3 seconds.

The chuffing thing still not powering up..............................any ideas before I have to buy a new pc/psu/mother board.

That's what I was thinking.

Might be a visit to the IT dept next week.

The lights on the motherboard will stay on for a little while after the power fails, capacitors etc.

Almost certainly the power supply,

Another vote for power supply.  Failed electrolytic capacitors are the usual culprit when something that was working fails to turn on next time.

They are the usual things that fail replaced mine a while back pretty easy to do and it was only about £25 from PC world. I actually did it myself.
