Need to install 1 light in a downstairs hall, and 3 light on the upstairs landing. Downstairs and the end of the landing will have a 2-way switch which is fine, but at the top of the stairs there will be a 4 gang 2 way switch. Can I replace the terminals from one of the 4 gang 2 way switches and replace it with the terminals of an intermediate switch? Therefore the lights upstairs can be turned on/off from downstairs, at the top of the stairs, and the end of the landing.

Cheers

Not wired it yet. What I intend to do is get a normal intermediate switch and take the 4 terminal back plate of the switch, and put that into 1 of the switches in the 4 gang switch. So it will have 3 2 way switches and 1 intermediate switch. Do you think this will work?  Not sure what a grid switch set up is, sorry.

Grid switches will let you do this.

The other one worth looking at is Click Mode. Their light switches, while not strictly grid switches, have modular replaceable switch modules.

So you would need to buy a 1G intermediate switch, then swap the module over with one of the switches in the 4G plate.

I quite like the click mode stuff, it's nice looking, cheap and versatile.

Don't try this with other makes, you will end up with springs and fiddly bits of metal all over the place.

image.jpgI agree with what the Jock above said!

i once tried taking a switch to bits and swapping the innards over, it worked but took a lot of fiddling to find all the springs and bits

you could get something like the one above...similar to click , all bits are interchangeable.

the one below is the only make i have ever seen where you gan get 5 switches on a single plate. It is by clipsal ans is in my dining room!

I'll bet the wiring for that is cosy in a 16mm back box.

I have found that in certain circumstances (which i have not worked out exactly)  those Clipsal 2nd fix plates of any type badly deteriorate and crack. They seem to be made of a nylon type material rather than hard plastic, Anyone else noticed this ?

Well if it is of any help.........these switches and plates are left over from a job about 15/20 years ago!

i spec'd them for above bedheads in a Nursing Home. All services were mounted on a half length of dado trunk. If the switches or sockets got donked then these accessories were F resistant to damage. The newer versions may not be so good.  The five gang switch was only fitted in my house about 12 months ago!......i new it would come in handy one day

i have had one of the switches for my bathroom lights for about 15 years, it is in constant daylight and has not faded or cracked

just hoarding
