a property can have no earthing (very old) and rcd will provide protection against direct and indirect contact?

No. RCD's are only classed as additional protection (411.3.3).

While lighting circuits without earths can be allowed (with provisions attached) a property with no earths on all other circuits is a re-wire situation. :)

do u mean as long as the lighting circuit has no metal fittings or switches

I'm glad. I can sleep easy tonight! :^O

Mind you after getting into work yesterday at 9am, finishing 7am this morning and then back at 2pm this afternoon and I'm still there X( I shall be resting very easily tonight!
