I recently applied for a job with a large chemical firm.

It offers an extremely good package with rates starting at 25k plus benefits.

The training program is five years long and the money rises by 3k per year till it tops out at 40k.

Anyways i have been offered the job and have until the 16th to make up my mind because that is when me medical is and thats when i have to sign my contract.

The trouble is im now begininng to wonder if im doing the right thing.

I have to say that i'm a bit jarred with being self employed but would be a bit gutted to give up the business.

Suggestions would be welcome.

Cheers.

Hmmm. Not helpful to you Maas, But I don't know what to say mate.

How is business at the moment?

Large Chemical company? There will be full benefits of, insurance, pension, paid holidays etc - but is it what you really want? - I don't know.

I'm stacked with work at the minute but i just dont seem to get any time off.

The hours at this job arent great but i do get lots of time off.

Its 12 hr shifts 2 days 2 nights then four days off.

Plus 33 days paid holiday.

They even give you

MAAS...

How do feel about being in control of your own business?

Why are you looking for a way out? (Because that's what your asking)

Ultimately the answer is with YOU..

B)

Its 12 hr shifts 2 days 2 nights then four days off.

I have some serious thinking to do.
And shifts are no good for your health whatsoever....

Maas m8.

Just read your post to the missus (She & I are in partnership in the business).

Not knowing your cirmunstances makes it difficult for anyone else to shed any light; but:

Only suggestion we can make it to make a list of pro`s and con`s for each scenario. Then count `em up, and see which is the longer!

Probably over-simplified; but difficult as a keyboard colleague.

p.s. Agree with Ext - I`ve done 12`s. You`ll end up needing their healthcare package m8. Soul-sapping hours. If you`ve a family; are they going to be happy with the hours they (Don`t) see you?

Don`t think I`d go back.

What is the concern with self-employ specifically?

What is the concern with self-employ specifically?

:D

Where to begin......

I only get 1 day off a week.

The paperwork.

The phonecalls at weekends and evenings from customers.

The suppliers always trying to rip me off.

The last minute calls from other trades.

The "can you justs".

The always chasing money.

There are obvious advantages to being self employed but also there are disadvatages.

I shouldnt moan i know, but im just getting depressed with my job.

I have worked 12's in the past and dont mind em at all.

Have to say that im leaning towards the employed route because it means i get 207 days off a year.

Last year i got 70 days off!

Ho hum.

I shall keep thinking.

The fact that you have applied for the job in the first place obviously means you are serious about going back onto the employed route..

I have heard people say that after been your own boss it can be very difficult going back to being employed!

I can't comment on that bit cuz I haven't gone down that path myself..

Do you know others who have changed back to being an employee after being their own boss?

Are there any others out there on the forum who could offer a bit of their experience.. ?:|

As they say..

"the grass can often look greener over the fence"...

till you get there and look back the other way over the fence!! :|

MAAS

i did that shift system for 6 years when i was single,,health was not an issue

12 hour shifts soon seem like 8 hrs after a few weeks

I was bored with the 4 days off, maybe keep your hand in with the sparky side on those days ??

Financally can you live on the money offered ???

Here are a few point sto ponder

As already said you went for the job

so you were not happy with wot you were doing

you made your decision when you accepted the interview,,did you not ???

if you have family and kids (young ones)and your working 6 days a week

(long hours) you are missing out on them growing up.

And that only happens once

Just another angle M8

Most definatley i have a mini mortgage so i'm very lucky in that respect

As already said you went for the job

Definatley not happy at the minute my quality of life sucks at the minute.

(long hours) you are missing out on them growing up.

I have no kids at present but want them real soon hence the big step towards a hopefully better quality of life.

And that only happens once

Just another angle M8

Thanks to everyone for their input.

It is certainly a help.

Still thinking but definatley leaning towards the employed route.
