Does anyone have a formula for working out how many downlights are needed for a given room to give an appropriate illuminance.

I am told that 750 lux is right for task lighting and 400 is about right for general light levels

In domestic kitchens I usually space 50w downlights at 1 mtr apart . First one about 600mm from wall to get it past the wall cupboards and onto the worktops. Sometimes add one in the centre too.

Downlights are difficult as the light spread is narrow.

As with EE

anything between 800mm and 1000mm, although this will also depend on the ceiling joists.
