I recently had a full re-wire carried out to 17th edition along with a LV circuit for telephone, speaker and arieal wires etc. The LV circuit is all within PVC conduit, terminating in metal back boxes with plastic outlet plates.

My question is: I want to change the plastic outlet plates on the LV circuit to chrome plated metal ones to match the existing HV outlets. Do the new metal plates need to be earthed even though they are completely isolated from any mains power?

As I have already spent a lot of money installing a system up to and beyond regulation requirments, I don't want to compramise it now.

I have had differing opinions about this and would appreciate any input.

Many thanks in advance.

No need for additional earth as by your own admission they are completely isolated from the electrical installation. Welcome to the forum.

Providing you install a fly lead from your metallic accessory to the back box, you should be fine.

OK scrub My thoughts, I was incorrect, I apologise.

Also if they were parts of dual outlet boxes with 230v power & communications, they would already be earthed by virtue of the 230v cable connections.

I always thought they need earthing after all they do have a terminal on them to be earthed. I always ask people if they are having metal plates if they are I run an earth from the nearest accessory.

they have an earth terminal incase they need them. if its SELV, then you may be introducing a potential that could never have previously existed, or worse case, taking the S from SELV

Is it the wholesalers who are making everyone call ELV stuff LV or what because this thread confused me until half way through reading the first post

its just a generic plate with different gubbins attached to it, hence the earth terminal.
Funny the contactum tv plate i have in stock says on the label this must be earthed but i suppose it could be a generic label as well.
