A luddite mate has just called. Uses his pc for FB & Johnny Vaughn mainly

Was running Ubuntu fine on his tower pc when he followed the on screen prompt that automatically came up to upgrade to 14.04. Reckons now that he has "no internet". He's using Netgear Powerline HD200 MBPS units with the pc plugged into that. His Samsung netbook is working fine so it's not the router etc.

I have always avoided Netgear as a make and have no experience of these. I've said first thing to plug the pc direct into his BT HomeHub thus bypassing the Netgear thing in the wall socket. Shouldn't be an issue as it's all on a wheeled trolley.

Do they need "setting up" does anyone know?

Cheers

A lesson in "if it ain't broke...."

Next time it invites him to "upgrade" he might say no.

OK,

my first piece of advice

NEVER upgrade via the prompt,

actually, NEVER upgrade, do a new install, thats the blessing of putting the OS on a seperate partition too.

bit late for that now though really.

I cant see it being the issue though,

if the install sees his ethernet connection, and it did as he was on internet then all the plugs do is move it,

deffo needs to plug direct into his router and try that as a first port of call.

Well..........according to Paul connecting direct to the router DIDN'T work! Seems a common issue with this upgrade:

Wondering if this will restart the ethernet?

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source

That will just remove the bcmlwi-kernel-source package

You will then need to re-install the package that you think will work and lock it to prevent it updating to a newer one (if the newer one is broken)
Cheers........I'm REALLY not sure on this (hence the post)! Just spoken to him again and he reckons "........everything's "greyed" out.....but I know where it is". So he then needs to reinstall the bcmlwi-kernel? Told him to hang fire....

and,

if he has no internet he wont be able to,

as above, what is 'greyed out' , is it just disabled?

I keep an Edimax wifi dongle 'just in case' , it just seems to work in Ubuntu, apparently the source code for edimax is in the kernel by default as edimax release it direct, same as HP .  :)

is it a Dell?

prob need BCM43 iirc?

oh, maybe thats wifi, I cant remember tbh, been a while.

I believe this is the fix:

"You just need to know how to edit a file....

You need to edit the file: /etc/resolv.conf

And add the following two lines:
nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save the file, and then restart the PC."

Though I've personally never edited a file like this I can navigate to the file no problem etc. Talking my mate through it is a another trial. It was something last night that we even managed to get him to open the terminal!

Only thing I can't figure is this "nameserver"......do I type in "nameserver" or is it something machine specific?

Cheers

I don't believe that will fix it - that is for name servers for DNS - i thought the issue was with the network/router
Ah! Sorry.........meant to add that he's tried connecting the pc direct to the router i.e. bypassing the Netgear mains power line link things and it still wouldn't connect. Apparently his son in law who "works in IT" has proposed this fix to the resolv.conf file. TBH, now I'm using this Zorin I'd forgotten how Ubuntu is laid out. So..........I've just made an Ubuntu 14.04 Live USB and running on that at the mo. I've navigated to here as in Files/Home/Computer/etc/resol.conf and I get to here:

Selection_001.png

Not sure if this is where I add the suggested two lines or the bit about not editing by hand..........

Cheers

You need to test the fns and connection before you start playing with the resolve file doing name servers and all that

If i get time ill post some linux commands to see whats going on

Ok here we go

First you need to open a terminal instance and type in the following

This will show you what DNS servers are being used

Then to see if google can see a website type this

 www.talk.electricianforum.co.uk.

Finally to edit your resolve file and add DNS servers do the following - Use 2 from google and 2 from your ISP (you will need to find out what these are)

Then close and save the file

Cheers for that. The first bit, no problems. The second editing & adding........well I'll be honest I'm struggling to understand "how" so me conveying to Paul over the phone is a bit of a non starter! I can talk him thru typing in cat /etc/resolv.conf at the terminal but for him to then convey that back to me will be a bit torturous probably. He can't even take a screen shot with a camera and send it as he only sends photos via his Ubuntu machine and doesn't know how on his Samsung netbook running Windows. I've asked him to tell me what and lines are that have "DNS....." in them.

"Finally to edit your resolve file and add DNS servers do the following - Use 2 from google ? and 2 from your ISP ? (you will need to find out what these are)"

In my post#12 above where do I add extra lines? resol.conf or interface_order...........or neither?

Cheers again.

Cheers, I had a play on the 14.04 LiveUSB I'm running here at the mo and got this far:

Selection_011.png

Now then, if I start to type anything the text appears just before the "#" at the top left where it says "# Dynamic..........".

Is that right?

Another one..............what's the command to find the ISPS DNS SERVER IP ?

Again, much appreciated.

Nano? What's that? Never used it so went to install from the software centre found it's a text editor but seems it's already installed. Figured I can run it from the terminal (if in doubt I usually type there and hit enter) and I can!

And to think I wasn't going have a drink tonight! And here's a laugh, I've just spent the last 20 minutes searching for "orange fns server" because of your typo!

Found then this (he's on Orange):

Selection_012.png

So........in terminal I first type:

sudo nano /etc/resolv.conf

That'll bring up the screen in #16.........I just then type:

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4
nameserver 195.92.195.94
nameserver 195.92.195.95

 ?

(Sorry for being thick!)

How do I save it?
