Hi all,

Simple one this;

Single phase motor, Cap start and run.

Very noisey when running, kind of like a motor but much louder! Not the bearings as noise stops when power off. Faulty Capacitor?????

Motor starts ok with no load, no idea with a load as the machine it was on starts without doing anything if you see what i mean. Motor seems to get very hot too....

I will test the cap with a meter tomorrow, but am i thinking along the right lines????

Try it without the cap (will need a shove to start it)

If it still makes a noise and gets hot,  then shorted turns and needs a rewind.

Hi Again.

It is a 3hp 1500 [or thereabouts] motor only one cap [a 60 microfarad one]. Cap is permanently in circuit, no centrifugal switch or anything. I just tried it and disconnected the cap when the motor was running, motor ran a lot quieter, but still rather noisey. I just tested the cap, and it comes out at 57 microfarads, soooooooo, motor knackered i presume?? It is one of them Clark "machine mart" ones, about 18 years old, but not used that much. Wonder what causes the things to go wrong?? Never been overheated or anything, probably only done a few hundred hours if that in all that time.. I have swapped it for a proper motor, just thought it might come in handy for something, apparently not though!!!!

Just had it running again, awful noisey, just like an imbalance fault. Have not measured the current yet, might be off the scale of my meter, cos it is supposed to be 14A and my meter only reads to 20....
