Not sure where to go on this.

I am not sure what this socket was used for in the front room, the socket is not active. But I am unsure of the other wires feeding through the wall which leads to the kitchen are connected to anything. The previous owners seem to have disconnected the old switch I assume it was for the fireplace. They just plugged it into the wall instead. The wife is getting a new fireplace and wants to remove the inactice switch on the wall, and all the wiring, failing that just intergrate the wiring Into the wall and cover over. Any tips on where to go on this?
