Organ Donation

I know this is a random topic, but recently a good friend of mine donated one of her kidneys to her dad. An incredibly brave thing to do, especially at the age of 19.

Last Friday I got the heartbreaking news that the transplant had failed. At first they were hoping that the kidney could be given to someone else, but unfortunately it was in such a bad state that it couldn't be used. So she has basically lost a kidney for nothing and her dad is facing a very long time on frequent dialysis before another transplant can be attempted (that is IF there is a suitable donor out there, I hate to think what happens if there isn't one).

Unfortunately, he is not the only person this has happened to. There is a shortage of organ donators out there, and apparently one of the reasons is because when someone pass away their family aren't sure whether the deceased person would approve of their organs being used for transplants or not.

I fully respect that some people aren't comfortable with the thought of donating their organs, but if you are then please, please register on http://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/ and help save lives. Thank you.

I fully agree with organ donation, I beleive it should be an opt out system.  But saying that, I am not on the register and I do feel uncomfortable about giving my own organs.

I am diabetic and they used to say your parts are no use. I had a look on the diabetic website and they now say your organs may be considered. I think I would definitely like to give my parts away if they were any good. I wonder though if people think by carrying a donor card you may be tempting fate and that is why not many people carry them.

I am on the organ donor register. It is 100% rubbish that they will try less hard to save you if they fancy a nice kidney.

I would only consider living donation to very close friends or family, but once I am dead they can do what they want with me. Batty - things like corneas can be used from almost everyone.

I think an opt out system would be great. But opting out would have to be an easy procedure, not like trying to get out of a Lovefilm contract (which I've discovered is more or less impossible to achieve without screaming at the person in their call centre ). Just so that no one would have their organs taken against their will.

I'm on the register, signed up when I had to exchange my driving licence years ago as there is a section about organ donation on the driving licence form

Yeah, it's a topic that freaks a lot of people out and those Steven King type movies don't help where organ recipients start seeing things from the donors past life and other such kak. I used to have a donor card when I was resident in Europe but I've never bothered since I relocated to Africa. Maybe I'll investigate the donor system here, I'm not even sure if there is one and if there is it's probably a low-key affair in a country where 90% of the healthcare budget goes on providing free antiretrovirals.

Haemo dialysis is an area that I am quite involved in!

I undertake half of the HHD installs for the local health trust that covers 1/3 of Wales approx.

As far as I know I am on the donor register, as is Mrs SW.

We will now check, however, IIRC Wales is going onto a presumed consent status anyway.

However, in the event, we both know the others feelings so donation would be a given.

Thus I get to meet many patients on both dialysis and having had transplants.

Please remember though, no matter how helpful a transplant is it's not a cure, it is a life changing op and is such a benefit you would not believe, however, it is just another form of treatment.

There is no cure unfortunately, until we can restart the patients original kidneys.

I have some pics somewhere of the diagnostic screens of a dialysis machine, they show all the internal treatment circuits and the sensors etc.

I'll start a new thread though.

misssweden, well done for starting this even though it is in sad circumstances.

I suggest your friend suggests that her family discuss home dialysis, perhaps even nocturnal dialysis, these are also life changing for the patient, if her dad was well enough for a transplant then he is almost certainly well enough for HHD.

There are other things to consider, however, it may be worth a thought.

Most of my parts are suitable for either sex, some parts would be better fitted to a bloke though.

I would like to have a caveat that the parts are not to be used for " people who have become ill because of their own foibles ", nor are they to be used for bankers , estate agents, traffic wardens, ...you know the sorts of which I talk
