In the office again.
Evenin` all :)

Got a callout today "flashing, sparking, and flames". We`ve turned the power off. - good idea;)

Gets to job - find 2.5 spur from "ring" to (unused) SSO under stairs- cable travels in void between string & internal wall.

Obvious rodent damage - but old. Cable been breaking down over time (rewired 1980`s) and finally given way big time.

Customer "shall I turn all the electric off"?

moi: "Yes, please."

Hears the thunk, and terminates cable within chocbox. cool.

"Can I have a look at the fusebox please?"

(Piccies will be posted tomoz. this is the worst install I have seen in 20 odd years of sparkin`) I took a few pics on site with `phone, but it was too dark for `em to show up.

Changed it today, and removed it EXACTLY as I saw it - think it`ll take some beating

All excited! :D

How am I going to sleep?! :(

Will it be like 'spot the difference', guess the most errors?

Ok.......

Remember, this is EXACTLY as I saw it (except it was energised at the time........)

The offending article.

You want to count faults?

The "tails" - VRC 6.0mm - Something running hot, maybe?

http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm323/kmelectric/IMG_0227.jpg

Loads were:

8.5KW shower - 6.0mm - 45A BS3871

7.2KW oven & hob - 6.0mm - 45A BS3871 - no carrier

"ring" (NOT) - 2.5mm - 30A BS3036

radials - 2.5mm - 15A BS3036 with tinfoil in place of fuse wire. & no carrier

lights - 1.0mm - 5A BS 3036

"spare" - not even a carrier!

http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm323/kmelectric/IMG_0228.jpg

"tails connected to henleys. EC is 4mm. Supply is PME. Western power changed meter & installed henleys 2002!

http://i316.photobucket.com/albums/mm323/kmelectric/IMG_0229.jpg

And the customer switched it off with his bare hands. Installed against the ceiling, in a plywood box, in the kitchen.

The occupants are tenants for the owner, who`s brother ( an industrial spark???? apparently) rewired the property 20 ish years ago.

And they looked at ME funny when I refused to re-energise!!!!!!!!

Just to make this crystal clear - There was no cover on the fusebox, and no-one even knew it was SUPPOSED to have one????

FFS!!!! :O:O

that is crazzzzy!!!

just luvv them tails!!! ; \

Martyn mate, I do not blame you one iota for refusing to re-energise. ffs, I have seen some dodgy stuff out there but this has to go to the top of dangerous & shoddy installs. AFAIAC.

Am stunned...

... the paintwork is terrible! :p

No, truly - that installation's a jawdropper

I have my hands as far away from my screen as possible!

I did a rewire about 6 or 7 years ago at a house with 8-way wylex board with NO front cover!

The CU was in the garage near to ceiling...

the customer kept an old wooden broom handle by the CU...

used it to operate the main switch before they ever had to change any fuse wires! :p

H&S thinking there use wooden broom handle NOT you hand near exposed conductive parts!!! :^O :^O:^O

Seems like a good plan specs. Is a wooden broom handle a subsititute for, or in addition to an RCD in new CU? How do things change if there's a head on the broom? Bet that's not in your big red book :D

I really should take some pics fro you chaps at some of the farms where I go. Only today I had to plug a scanner into a half burnt out double socket. Was glad for my wellies :D
