Hi There,

I am after some info on photovoltaic systems. I have a barn that has 4 twin 5ft tubes and a 400w Metal halide light.

I currently run them off a generator, but the noisy and smelly and not really what I want,

I was wondering if any one has had any dealings with PV panels.

I am trying to get something that would charge up some leisure batteries, and then power the lights by putting it though an inverter. The lights would only need to be on for about 2 hours MAX in the evening.

Any info would be very helpful

Cheers

;)

My first thought would also to look at changing the lighting to lower energy where practical.

This would reduce the loading/demand on any Voltaic system.

the only thing to change would be the 400w M/H.

I have looked at running a SWA but it 300m away from the house are any other Source... big Volt drop!

Which really does make it very expensive in terms of cabling/work etc.

(I make that 10mm SWA for 1KW loading and 5V drop)

Danny,

The price per output rating of these cells is very high, consideration may have to be given to LED lighting or even consideration for the SWA option.

1K-3K...Ish...

We have a generator, but I was just looking at other options, maybe even a wind turbine, just something the charge the battery.

It doesn

danny do you need to use it everyday?

with a couple of car batterys and an inverter and

it will be every day , through out winter.... what are you thinking , take the batterys back home and charge up?
no a 80w cell will charge a battery in a day probably 2 battery's

think there one currently bidding under that finishes soon on the bay.

or here @

regarding the inverter, i have got 4 twin 5ft fittings and a 400w discharge light...

= 864w *1.8= 1555.2 would i need an inverter approx 1.5KW - 2KW

think thats right?

Please can someone confirm

dont forget your start up currents - even with your 1.8, some inverters wont start - i.e i have an 800W/1.6KW peak inverter in the van, and it wont start a 11W portable light!)

the tubes are 58w 4 twin= 464w plus 400w discharge light = 864w *1.8 (start up currents) 1555.2w

i think...???
a quality 1k should do it they do have surge capacity

not sure on cost tho might not be too nice
