Hi all, I'm new to the forum so bare with me. I would like to know if the PV industry is worth branching out into. I have 15 years working as an electrician and did a 4 year apprenticeship. Is the industry flooded with installers? Is it a highly competitive industry and is there a lot of sub standard installers that under cut everyone and difficult to compete with. I have heard of reports of many 5 week wonders doing a PV course and installer them for half the price. Many thanks

in short :-

1/Not as good as it was

2/Not flooded, but now oversupplied

3/ You can still pick your market position cheap / expensive, middle of road.

4/ Nots lots, just big outfits and their subbies (now severly slashed in quantity due to curatailiment of free -fit systems. Price cutting is achieved via cheap parts - can be out sold on quality

Like everything it was good to start with and some made and will make lots of money out of it, but from what I read the bubble has burst.

I never bothered venturing into this market as I felt it would fizzle out and not be worth the investment, while others around me kept banging on that it was the way to go.

Time will tell and I hope I am proved wrong to those around me that have gone into it lock-stock-and barrel.

Been doing PV and leccy, lost some smaller customers, kept my main ones, and had a good year. PV dwindling, but it's working at sustainable levels, and lower prices is bringing people back into market, so not dead yet.
