Hello all,

A little birdie tells me they are changing the gas safe regulation wording, substituting "competent person" with "qualified person" My source reckons your controlling government are toying with the idea of doing the same to the EAWR 1989.....

My gas buddy reckons it will put a "wrecking ball" straight through industry and warned me "watch out"

that makes me wonder. what would be the consequence for our industry, domestic or otherwise? at least i will be busy at college:_|

sounds good to me, no offence to any on here but hopefully they will change the requirements for said qualifications to make sure we only have people with reasonable experience become qualified.

will it stop DIY bob from having a go! ?:|
no chance

just to show how some people have no idea, got called to a house with no power

quickey discovered MCB was off. turn back on, big flash. obvious a serious fault.

just as quickly notice 1 wall light is removed, with L, N & E all connected into same terminal....

would be a positive step but us bottom of the technical services ladder will never get that. more likely to go the other way "anyone have a bash at it" headbang

i always thought the gas industry had nothing of a problem like we do regard diy'ers ?

The problem I would have is in the definatition of the term qualified, as I did a 4 year apprentiship as an electrician for a car manufacturer so I have a host of qualifications for that but as it was a few years ago none of the new city and guilds people do at college now- I did a Btec OND and NVQ's, and I'd be pretty sure there are many on this forum who did apprentiships even longer ago who have nothing relevant to todays qualification strucure other than the 2391, 17 ed etc, so how do you define qualified without forcing everyone onto a course at I would expect a huge expense.

blue but put together with "competent testing" then you prove your ability and you've paid your learning dues

I suppose that it's possible to make it non-retrospective so that it will only affect people coming into the industry after a certain date. A bit like they did with HGV licences in the 70s whereby anybody who had been driving one for a certain period of time automatically got a licence.

i can't see why old qualifications would be any less valid than new qualifications, i am sure that the qualifications i earned ten years will be different to what is being done now or at least will be in the future.

it would be nice to change the law on the selling/buying of electrical equipment so that you can only buy it you show an appropriate trade card which is only avail to appropraitely qualified people.

hi all,

thanks for the replies so far.

my birdie sees the implications like this, for the gas......

on big jobs you have 10 mates to one fitter, the mates being instructed and supervised......

when this law comes in, how can the mates work on the gas line as they are not "qualified" to do so....?

for those who dont work on big electrical projects a similar scenario is bourn out with a huge mate/ sparkie ratio...

one side of my head says good, more work for the sparkies though the other side is sad. i have been honoured to work with many "mates" who were much better than a lot of "electricians":coat

i believe the gas change is definitely "on", the electrical change is merely "rumour"

ah the original post never mentioned it may,may not be getting applying to us too. interesting rumours indeed.

the way round mates is as long as they are in training on a proper c&g course and being supervised by qualifieds would be ok by me.

i mean we had to start somewhere.

working on site with apprentices/sparks will never and can never be stopped as how will people train? but i don't agree with having a mate to sparky ratio where the mates out number the sparks, thats just stupid! i could live with there being more apprentices than sparks but only by a small ratio(2-1 maybe) and then only let the more competant/higher level apprentices have a bit more freedom but all the work should be overseen by a sparky, it was when i was apprentice!

That has been tried in other parts of the world before. The result was that DIY work just got done with any old bits of cable and accessories which could be scavenged, even if not really suitable, because people couldn't buy new.

Does the change to "qualified person" put an end to DIY gas work then?

Before you all ask, up until now it's been legal for any "competent" person to do gas work in their own home (I have always done my own) it only becomes an offence when you do gas work for others without being a registered gas installer.
