I'm debating buying a small 2-bay NAS for the house that will sit next to and plug into the BT Home Hub 3 on one of the spare ports. This for photos, music and films etc. Synology seems to be the name to go for. If I was to fit 2, 2TB drives, then is it possible to configure this as some form of RAID so as I have two copies of the data - this to protect against loss? I know zilch about RAID etc having never played with it! Cheers.

Cheers for that your a star, duly scoobed! Looking at that Novatech site you linked I see a Netgear 2-bay NAS enclosure for like £60 less than a similar Synology one. Same spec and a 3 year rather that 2 year warranty. Also Netgear have a similar RAID calculator on their site. Are Netgear any good or is it that Synology are that much better?

+1 on synology. got one a few month ago. choice betwen that and netgear, but after certain members going on about how great th synology was, thats what i got.

A Synology will also do you your own personal dropbox, the only thing you need to do is to upload your files manually from your mobile devices, I've not found a way to auto upload yet, but, I've not looked either.

It is proving very useful more than I expected to be honest.

I have begun to scan in stuff and throw the paper copies away, in the belief that it will be safe there!

No not invoices, but site work sheets and stuff like that.

I have a Synology here, but it's more than a 2 bay.

Canoe, you have 1 @ home, 1 @ work, 1 @ the data centre, the 4th?

IIRC the home & work units are the same as mine & the data centre one is the RS version of those?

I decided to go for one big volume and control the shares with user accounts, got a problem with one user account, but just not had the time to sort it out.

Do I read it that you`ll have one for sale soonly?

I am in need of something.

For others` info - my raid box failed internally; although all drives, and the array, report as "ok" - I can`t get access to the shares :(

There are a number of options - so far none have worked-  but the array is "apparently" intact - I `just` have to get another box to read the existing array, rather than deciding to create a new, EMPTY one!!!!!!

Raid is good - but, as I`ve found to my detriment, not infallible. All my pics, music, and business data was on that raid - am not looking forward to visit from NICEIC AE this year - I`ll have to try & get copies of certs from clients...................... `cos easycert stuff is all on the raid :(
