On a recent Home AV install, the customer wanted HDMI over CAT6 distributed from a media room, As a fall back and just in case of some technical issue with CAT6 we installed an HDMI cable local to the TV

Suffice to say during the TV install the HDMI head got damaged (outer screen broke from moulding) and the cable was SNAFU

Just to make life interesting, the technical issue did appear (AppleTV does not HDCP sync with Samsung over the baluns), so was left with the problem of how to solve, routing a new cable is not an option due to the location.

Up until this point I'd assumed that dressing HDMI cables was not an option, until that is, you buy these

and instructions here

If you fancy close pin soldering Toby have a solder version too

So now if you need to run HDMI through joists etc, rather than drill 22mm holes you could get away with 10-12mm

Just be aware that the colour coding in the 2nd link is the guide when you dress both ends

If repairing one end you will need to cut open the broken end to confirm the pin colour coding as this may differ to the guide colours.

This is easier than it sounds, the connector sleeve is normally made of a malleable plastic, cut the cable about 80mm from the connector, strip back the cable sleeve and use a ohms meter between pin and strand ends. The grouping will be as the 2nd link

thanks robojin, do you have a good link as to a good HDMI cable?

I dont do much of this but it would be really easy for me to stream to my bedroom TV using this method rather than all the other stuff I use for my TV downstairs, HDMI out on my PC and its almost back to back with my bedroom TV.

could do it for future in the rest of my rooms too plus an extra for peeps. :)

I quite often use http://www.knoxed.com/etrade/login.php, trade side of UKHDMI, you will need to call to setup login

As discussed before you could buy a 3m

thanks robojin,

I have actually lost some work due to the sheer cost of people not wanting to go to the expense of streaming(dont blame them, oldish people mostly),

but now I can give the option of simply having the movie played on the computer showing on the TV it may be viable.

its usually a son(-in-law) or something has sent a film and they have no idea how to burn so this old couple are huddled round the PC watching a film.......

will deffo try this with my own TV/PC though, sounds good,

and will probably be simpler to just do both ends any time, not like the plugs are expensive TBH.

Thanks for the post, might be best in a new thread as it is completely of topic, but that's not unusual for this forum :)
