What is the best way to test wires on an outside light, my mate wants to replace his light but when he removed the old light it was wired in singles all the same colour and no sleeving used.

The LIVE (switched) can be found by measuring between one of the REDs (or whatever colour they are..) and CPC (test in turn), and activating the switch...

(With a Volt stick or similar device..)

:p

Wouldn't the light work just the same whichever way L&N were wired?
Not necessarily, he could be replacing it with a unit that has a built in PIR that is polarity sensitive.

More importantly though, if anybody opens it up to work on it then they will expect the live feed to actually be connected to the terminal marked L or coloured brown.

If 'L','N' & 'E' are ALL singles & same colour..

he'd have problems if put the live to the E on the fitting..

& put N&E across the bulb...

(and its a metal light fitting!!!! :| :( )

Any way if 'L', 'N' & 'E' are all there..

a continuity check should be able to identify which pair are the 'N'&'E'..

thus the third on is the 'L'!

;)

Why not do an R1+R2 test on the circuit live wire should be switched then do a R1 Rn followed if necessary by Rn R2 by the time you have done the three tests you should be able to identify which is which CJS

agreed, or try and see where the singles are comming from. ( a jb i presume) and replace them with the correct colour.

as above.... re wire it and do it correctly ..lol... or the very least flag the singles for future reference.
