short circuit location

hello,

what is the best way for finding a short circuit and does any one have a diagram they can post.

once circuit is known, split half way. check which half has the fault. split that half again. and keep going until its found

If you know the cable route then you could measure the resistance between the shorted cables and get an estimate at the length of the cable run using Appx.9 in OSG (with nothing fitted/plugged into the circuit). If its a ring, make sure the other side is "floating" to avoid multiple paths.

Always ask if anyone has just fixed a cupboard or put a shelf up or nailed down some squeaky floorboards. Also ask if anyone heard a bang, where was it.!

get someone to flick the breaker on and on and on.

then you listen for the bang to locate.

it gives you a reading of the full length and along the line you get small spikes were joints are and either a large spike were the fault .then its just a case of measuring the distance along the route

A Time Domain Reflectometer (TDR) is only good if you know the actual route of the cable.
