Should you judge a tradesman on tool choice?

The callipers arrived this morning. Something I hadn’t taken in to account was the sharp edges on the blades. I’ll have to give them a rub with emery cloth so they don’t damage silver coins. The blade geometry won’t be changed.

my old apprentice training manager was famous for having once polished a Guage Block set, cos they were a bit rusty, thereby rendering them absolutely useless!

How a gauge block set could become rusty is beyond me. They were treated like royalty, you had to sign in blood to get them out of the tool room. The marking out table was a marble slab on a cast iron frame.

I changed my mind about the emery and used a diamond needle file at 45°, the anvil faces haven’t been touched.

finger oil is sightly acidic, said manager was working in m/c shop inspection at the time - like all useless idiots he got posted to training where he could do no harm.... :pmsl1:

I knew a bloke once that wasn’t a big used of his tools so he decided to cover them in Fairy Liquid to protect them and then pack them away in a box.

Fast forward 6 months approx and went to get his Elliot Lucas pliers out of said box only to discover that instead of being pristine he has met with a box of rust, turns out he told me, that Fairy has a high salt content to aid cleaning. Unfortunately not good for tools 😀

The one to be wary of at the moment is Bergen, it's normally good gear, I've been using it for ages, but last year at a steam fair I bought a set of crowsfoot wrenches, only used them recently and snapped one, apparently they've been copied (as usual) so you have to be careful about where you buy them. Agree about the halfords pro stuff though, just watch out for the special offers, they can be a bit odd. I had a set of ratchet spanners, but wanted a set of the flexi ones, at the time I think the 9 piece set was about £70 and the 12 piece set about £90, one bank holiday weekend they had specials on, the 9 piece set was reduced to £50, and the 12 piece set to £45! Hmm, do I still buy the 9 piece set? lol.

Had a warranty claim once, couldn't find the receipt, no problem, took the item back and the lady on the till just went and got me a new one, if they no longer produce that item they give you the closest comparable item.
