i want multi room audio i have seen a idea in the tinternet basically a computer acting as a music server with multiple 5.1 surround sound cards, then form that cables going to each room then to an amp after that to the speakers.

Can I make a 5.1 speaker system with individual components from maplin or rs components

the sound card in question is from maplin A80JB it says "

I reckon M107 can give you good advice on the hardware, also look at audio multiplexers as a distribution method, do you need to have different audio in each zone?, if so it will get a little more complex

Why do you need 5.1, this is really a movie requirement, DTS was the only marginally successful surround 5.1, but the artist catalogue is some what small, 2.0 should more than suffice for an mp3 server

4x XP licences hmmm no comment but I'm sure people find away around that small difficulty

As Linux is an Open Source operating system (no licences too) you can get pretty much any thing working if you know how to code, or add .src files to Linux, a good Linux distro to use for this is http://www.kde.org/ very much suited to multimedia apps and project such as yours, also have a look at the XBox Media Centre ported to PC's Linux, Windows etc http://xbmc.org/ I have this running under KDE for movies in one room
