...I am considering getting Sky installed, Guys.

Could you tell me more about it please?

I understand that I have to continue to pay BT for line rental?

Who is that payable to? Sky or seperate bill from BT?

What does that cost nowadays please?

Looking at a package for my children, sky 1, sky (which the darts are on) I don't want the full and expensive package.

Best phone them and see what they say. if you are still contracted to BT for another x amount of time etc, you could always say that if they discount you for that time, you will go with them. they are usually willing to offer stuff like that to get customers.

or phone and tell them what you want and ask what they can offer you

looking at Digital TV High Definition Satellite TV from Sky – Join Now - Sky Packages

i think you would have to variety pack for gold etc, and knowledge pack for discovery.

and then you'd probably need the childrens pack for the kids, then the music pack depending on their ages. then you'd want the movies for friday/saturday night... so you might aswell just get the full package...

Would be more useful if you could say to sky i want these channels and thats it. out of the hundreds of channels i have available, i probably only watch around 20 + movie channels

Sky offer 'free' broadband to a limited number of areas if you are a customer with any TV package. My house not eligible. I pay

You will still have to pay BT for the line rental Quarterly charges, and sky has to be conected to your phone line via the sky box for a minimum 12 months as part of the contract.

If sky plus it has to be connected to your phone line at all times , that is without the modem for your broadband use.

mines never been connected to either since sky kept sending letters saying the 2 boxes are on diff phone lines... kinda hard when there is only 1 phone line!

To have their broadband service, you have to allow them to take over your phone line (according to Mumbai customer services).

How much is it?

Depends on whether your exchange is unbundled or not, and what sort of speeds you want.

Depends on whether your exchange is unbundled, how long your phone line is & how much noise is on your phone line.

I wouldn't bother with Virgin, their "fair usage policy" is so restrictive that it is possible to hit your "daily" bandwidth allowance in under 20 minutes.

Never found that problem to affect me personally. And I do a lot of downloading.

At least when they give a download speed it actually is what they say it is. No dependence on how far you are away from the BT exchange or how many other people on your road are using the ADSL lines. And the price of the bundle you buy doesn't have the BT line rental added on as a 'hidden cost'.

The UK could of had a proper fibre optic system a long time ago if BT weren't still required to supply a copper line to every household then were forced to unbundle that line to another company.

As they say, they sometimes moderate the speeds. I've never had a problem with the amount of stuff I download.
