Home for the terminally bewildered, one step ahead
So apart from making a few walking sticks I have started to,tidy my garage. Now this is not your normal garage, it's the main reason I bought the house. The idea was to get a Ford escort rs2000 that had been rear ended and a replacement shell. Sit the two next to each other and swap, bits over as and when ( we worked for 12 Ford dealerships so parts were not a problem ) easily done in the space as you can get 2  cars in there with their doors open and walk around easily, oh and a Mini Cooper as well.  Anyway, children were born and It never happened. Garage just got fuller and fuller. 5 work benches, 2 lathes, dedicated diving kit service area all stainless steel , and more tools than you can shake a faeces coated twig at

so,to the crux of the matter....I was thinking of all the tools I have had....still have most of them as I am very light on them and do not abuse them. So,

i have some pliers and cutters that are over thirty years old....you can see date stamp on them...and who remembers Elliot Lucas snips?IMG_1347.JPGIMG_1348.JPGIMG_1350.JPG

I was going to start tidying my garage today. Double with two Capris in there and zero room to move. A work bench I can't get to. Trim, a fridge, industrial dust extractor, boxed up wc. The list goes on.

Instead I worked on the CAD trying to figure how to cut away the truss rafters and do a "room in the roof" for storage.

doing it on CAD is one thing, going it to the roof is a different beast!! But good luck either way just don’t put the Capri’s up there.

That's tomorrow

and what added extra do,they have to PIMP them up to the next level?.......oh yes!

and a 'pilot drill adapter'.....quite rare

and Stabnley ratchets

and maybe even an Electricians short sweep joist brace. Pretty certain I've still got my 1" auger and broom handle somewhere🦄💩

So I have just re-lit the garage/workshop with some lights I took out of a job about 9 years ago!   Twin 5' T5 35 W. so I now have 8 of them an an additional in wife's Tack room. She has been asking for ages and I keep, telling her that she doesn't keep needing to remind me every six months

i am forcing myself to sort out a "bit box" everyday..you know, the rooting box that all the odds and sods go in!  Boy oh boy have I found some stuff it'll be a long time before I have to buy any plugs and screws

then I pick an area of workshop and have a little blitz and binning session. Just found an old plane that I lost years ago. So it was nice and sunny yesterday, set up workmate outside and set to work. Bearing in mind this plane must be about 55 years old AND was made in England

should pass away a few hours in the sun later today!

Save yourself a lot of hard work and get some citric acid powder.

Just treat the powder as if it were Deox-C:

DO NOT leave your plane blade in there for too long. As me how I know 🙁 ...it'll thin the hardened faces / edges.

(That's my little heated ali tank I knocked up. Keeps it bubbling away at a constant 70 ish degC. Makes for super rapid derusting).

Electrolysis with washing soda crystals is the other method I use:

I have citric acid and some ultrasonic cleaners ( diving equipment servicing )

white vinegar is also very good

i got some very odd looks and was asked a lot of questions when I went to the chemists for a kilo of it! 👃

Just bought another 20kg of citric acid from here:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/str/jumpingbugzy

Out of stock now it seems.

My planes have had a little more TLC than yours. Goodness knows how old they are but they were my Dad's, and I'm in my 70s.

The second picture is a tip for looking after the blade in storage, without having to retract it and lose the setting.

@Onoff that heated tank has given me an idea..... ive got an unused deep fat fryer in the garage...I will have to see what temp it goes down to

I just repurposed a cylinder stat on the side of mine. Switching capacity is probably way under what it should be for the element but it hasn't died yet. It never boils anyway. 65-70degC and it works like magic. Can't even remember where the element came from. The ali "tank" was just an exercise in TIG welding than came out watertight. All built originally for tin plating pcbs (that didn't work 😂).
