Is it good or bad ?

I think i may have malware or similar and  since upgrading Java i now get,    Program....ssvagent.exe       Publisher... Oracle America, inc   wants to make changes to my hardrive     everytime i open a window. I always click no, but when googling it most people have problems ?

Well read this, if its any help.

It seems to be a bug in the Sun Java installation file.
This is one possible solution on the Sun Bug forum, from someone named Lee. Open Internet Explorer and...
Tools -> Manage Add-ons -> Enable or Disable Add-ons
Click on SSVHelper Class
Select Disable under Settings.
Hope it works!

Two thoughts

1) Hopefully the suggestions above help you deal with it whilst Oracle yet again work out what's going wrong

2) DO you actually NEED Java installed.

It is considered a very old and inherently poor way of letting mini-programmes and web-code run things on your machine and in this age of viruses /trojans etc it is a popular easy-way-in for hackers. The US dept of justice recently advised all americans to stop using it (Imagine how bad things need to be for that . . !!)

http://www.techradar.com/news/software/applications/u-s-government-advises-users-to-disable-java-1124717

While many sites still have java code in them MOST sites will have alternative code/ways to run other things (Flash, Shockwave etc) and will run where the users java installation is absent, disabled or restricted. Java's weekly security updates are a demonstration that they are playing catch up with the hackers and cannot make it inherently hack-proof. So when you see the java icon pop up in the system tray don't assume that Java is essential on that site. Your browser offered Java and the site said OK then . . .

I know we all needed it once, (like DOS) but this Windows7 PC for instance was re-built in mid December, With all the above in mind I intentionally didn't install Java and have yet to find a site or web-shop /form that I can't access without it just using internet explorer.....

HTH

I also note that as early as October last year Apple has recently forcibly uninstalled it from Mac computers via an OS update making it a user decision if they insist on re-installing it

If it is, or you suspect it is, a virus, download the free version of Malwarebytes and fully update it. Then boot into Safe Mode (on my PC I have to tap F8 after the "beep" to give me running options) and run Malwarebytes.

If it is a naughty Mbam should catch it. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the replies. However i had already read the thread Steve posted along with loads of others. Not knowing that musch about pc's i am wary of clicking anything. I had  also already started downloading the Malwarebytes stuff via the CNet site (which i trust) but reading the feedback i stopped it immediately, not one good remark.

Anyhow, after confirming it was not a virus and just a program fault i clicked  accept  and everythings now fine.

To be honest I've never seen one bad remark regarding Malwarebytes, not even during the 3 years I was busy helping people out with bsod issues. I couldn't see a bad review on the cnet page for Malwarebytes either.HOWEVER!! I have seen loads of bad reviews on how the cnet site usually makes you download an executable (exe) "download" program so you can download the executable (exe) program you wanted to download in the first place.

I will say that this "objectionable" extra download is not (usually) involved when you are after a security software download.

When they started this practice I started their google search entries and now I go to either FileHippo or MajorGeeks, but only of the 'o.e.m' doesn't provide their own download link (which isn't very often).

HTH
