I have a domestic client who has a strange lighting problem. His lounge light is on a dimmer switch and whenever you turn the brightness up in the lounge, the hall light dims. When the lounge light is fully on, the hall light is off. Has anyone come across a problem like this before?
Have you been to the customer yet?
Or is this just their description of the fault..?
I think there are probably a few more symptoms also evident..
Anyway..
Bottom line is for a lamp to go dim while the other goes bright means one lamp is in parallel with the dimmer switch while another is in series with the dimmer...
So ...
As the dimmer turns off more current goes through the parallel lamp and less though the series lamp, until both lamps just stay on glowing dim.
As the dimmer turns on more current goes though the dimmer and the parallel lamp dims while the series lamp brightens.
You need to establish a few facts on the job..
1/ Has there been any rewiring/alterations/extensions added etc..
such that the lights have NEVER actually worked correctly?
2/ Is this an older installation that used to work OK and had no rewiring work done?
3/ Have any switch's or lamps been replaced recently?
Moist likely an accessory changed somewhere and wires put arse about face!!
Is the installation looped at switches/lamps/j-boxes/or Dunno!?
