Hi, I have no knowledge of electrical matters, but I would like to put a small on/off switch into a kettle lead. ( So that I can remotely switch on and off the powered speaker that it will be attached to.) The switch is bought from Maplin and basically just attaches and detaches the wire that it is connected to.

My question is, is it best to use the brown (live) or the blue (neutral) wire ?

Thanks for any help.

Most definitely switch the Live, brown wire.

You terminology "kettle lead" is condusing as I would  definitely not recommend an in line switch for a kettle as the load is too high I suspect for most in line switches.

What you actually have is an IEC mains lead as as it's only for a low power device an in line switch will be fine.

Either Murdoch's or Apache's suggestions have got to be the best solution, just a question of manual control or remote and a bit more hi-tec.

Hi - OP gbooker here. I just want to say a heartfelt thanks, and what a brilliant forum this is. I'm so grateful for all the answers. It really means a lot that people are prepared to share their knowledge like this.

I'm going to go with Apache's solution as it's perfect for my needs, but all the responses have been really useful.
