Im quite new to this and doubt myself a lot. I did think these were 16mm but with the outer insulation look bigger than 16mm so was unsure but thanks for the replies. Ill post some more pics up as im thinking of changing my cu for assessment but where I live is concrete floor, walls, ceiling so im gonna post some more pics/questions for you if you dont mind as if I have to upgrade bonding to the gas (which meter is outside in box) its gonna be hard as everythings concrete.

Cheers

wheres the covers gone? probably 16mm at a guess
Took it off for the photo but has never been sealed since i moved in in 2001 and cover just falls off. Ive had to take the handle off the cupboard door so the kids cant get in the cupboard as its dangerous without a seal....i think

Is the TNS earthing conductor normal in my pic?

Maisonette built in 1974. All wiring in conduit (used as earth) sunk in walls.

Gets a good Ze of 0.09 ohms. Voltage 242v and PFC 2.69kA

Cheers

Hi Matty,

Why not get some 25mm tails & offer them up, If they are 16mm there will be a difference ;) & If they are 16mm u can replace?

If they are not 16's not you can always use the 25's on another job?

I too am doin a cu change for my major part of my assessment but waiting for a gap in college so the dno can come out n fix up some 50 year old leaky piece of iron :p

Good luck with the assessment :D

Generally I will change tails on cu change unless its been done recently after all you should be working to new wiring colours and red doesn't comply.

If you were installing it yes, but you aren't so it's fine.
But you are installing consumer unit to new colours so surely tails should suit those colours although I suppose you could put some brown insulation tape around the red.

Do you always replace all red cables when doping a CU upgrade, or do you sleeve all red cables on a CU upgrade? The supply cables are the same as outgoing cables, if the supply to the CU was 30m of SWA would you rip the house apart just because they were the wrong colour?

But we are talking about about half a metre of tails that probably has been in for forty years surely you would replace that.

What size are these tails ?
Looking at the amount the terminal screws are sticking up compared to the ones on the concentric and assuming the concentric is around 16mm I'd guess the tails are 25mm

The tails will have been in for the same amount of time as the rest of the wiring so I wouldn;t replace just because they have been in for x amount of years. I do generally replace tails on a CU change but that's just because as you say, they're a couple of metres long and might as well be done at the same time, but there is no reason why I couldn't leave the old ones in on most jobs.

Thanks for the repies guys. These tails must have been installed prior to me moving in in 2001 so circa 2000.
I'd say those tails have been in since the 70's\80's.

Can't be re-wiring the whole gaff because it's old colours ?:|
