Saves a fortune in fuel mate. ]What is the advantage of having a static IP address?
the main reason im going for static ip as snakehips :slap suggests is due to the dedicated micros cctv dvr :^O needing a static ip, plus ill be able to log into the pc and see what you lot are doing at 2am when im in the hotel in octoberSaves a fortune in fuel mate. ] Actually Steps, that is a good question. What is the advantage of having a static IP address, Badger?
another reason to have static ip address not ddns/dynmic ip is to view the home cctv system :innocentMost of the plusnet packages can enable a static IP and is freeThe Plusnet stuff is capped BUT they dont kill you they just send you an over bandwith warning for the month and then the following month if you do it again they ask you to upgrade accounts
Their fair use is fair to be honest
And from memory if you do a lot of stuff between 12am to 6am it doesnt come out of your bandwidth and / or isnt limited (cant remember)
All i can say is i have 2 accounts with them and both accounts get hammered and i never have a problem
Some other reasons for static ips - Running your own mailserver (SMTP inbound) - VPN (virtual private network) implementations require one or both sides of the VPN to have a static IP address -If you are connecting to your company network and need access through their firewall sometimes this needs a static ip assigned
You can get round some static ip problems with DDNS (Dynamic DNS) which uses a third party (I could explain but its not a nice way to do it and i personally dont like it and have had trouble with it in the past)
