On my next contract, a bathroom refurb, i am fitting new shower circuit and changing existing fan from 230v to 12v.

So my question is do I have to RCD the lighting circuit, as the fan is off the bathroom light, as i am fitting a transformer.

The shower will be RCD protected as it is a new circuit from either RCBO of seperate enclosure.

Also on the spec they have ask for supplementry bonding 'to the current code of practice', do I have to supplementry bond?.

Thnaks in advance.

RCD the light (and anything else) and you dont need supp bonding
but Andy it's clearly not a 17th board as no RCD on the light so he does need to supplimentary bond?! All circuits not on RCD

Or am I being a silly vet...........

All circuits into a bathroom under 17th edition should be rcd protected.

Do a continuity test on the pipework from cold to hot, if the reading is less than or equal to 0.05 ohms no bonding required, providing ALL circuits are rcd protected.

Assuming, shower ceiling pull switch, then linking shower to light isn't hard, and most showers have bond to pipework internally so pretty much covered. Supplementary bonding is required as this is a 16th installation, unless RCDs added, as stated by greeny

Silly vet...

you would make the alterations to 17th... which is RCD on light/ shower/ other equipment and no bonding req'd providing good continuity of pipework

had this question on my assessment

new shower needs rcd

everything else either supplimentary bonded or rcd'd that includes the lights

does not matter that its a 16th board

Andy is right

If your going to need to put an rcd/rcbo on for the shower, might as well put one on the lights at the same time and save the hassel of bonding.

Yes but don't forget lack of RCD is only cat4 defect, so you can basically work to 16th, however updating to 17th is easier than bonding (especially as bonding is normally absent) so that gets my vote.

check if it needs bonding first, poss plastic pipes, may not even be earthy etc
