I need to fit a rectifier to a 12 v ac transformer to get dc. but can somebody tell me what all the letters mean on the rectifier ie. If Vrrm Ifsm Ir :)

I might add a little explanantion, Vrrm is important, one must consider the pk to pk output of transformer, more so when the output voltage is high.

For 230V AC rectification, one would normally use a 1N4004 (400v), or greater. Beyond this voltage the diode is likely to fail. for 12V AC applications, the 1N4001 would be fine (where the load/supply current is 1A maximum).

Ifsm is the maximum current that can pass through the diode for a given period, without frying the device (which again would lead to it's failure if exceeded)

Ir for most applications can be ignored..
