the guy wants to run a plug in oil heater (2Kw) lap top, printer and light.

would 2.5 be ok? or should i go with 6?

thanks

Volt drop springs to mind so 2.5 may be on the small size

Under what situations would you have to use an earth rod even though the house is tncs say

You need to decide on your Maximum demand, applying any diversity

1 x lighting circuit?

1 x Heating circuit?

1 x Radial Socket outlet?

80 meters is a long way and wont be cheap to install so best to get it right.

The lighting circuit is your limiting factor 6.9volts.

So if we used a Maximum demand of 16 amps with 70degree 6mm swa we have

16x7.3x80/1000 = 9.3 volts even applying ct it only gets it down to 8.2 volts.

Id sit down with the customer and see what it is they require and equate your maximum demand and work from there.

What about 4.0mm??? :)

How big is the shed/office

Is it insulated..

Does it NEED 2kWatts....

there are many lower power heaters that may be up to the job...

e.g. including timer & thermostat you can get it to switch on to warm the office up 1/2 hour before you want to work in there..

say a 1.5k model...

If you use Low energy lighting

the Laptop & printer are minimal power consumption

I guess you could get max demand approx 1500k - 1750k...

If we were talking 7amps (1610watts)

voltdrop with a 4mm cable gives 7x11x80/1000 = 6.16volts

Think that might be pushing it a little. :)

Lets not forget there will also be volt drop on the final circuits and future additions to the office/shed, like a fridge for cold beers and definitely a Kettle:D

Why waste money on three core when two core will do. Personally I would put an adequate supply in to cover future needs nothing worse than putting in too small a cable then 6 months later they need more amps.

Why waste money on .... when ... will do. Basically you just replace the dots with suitable words related to the subject at hand and that's the motto of the cowboy in question. ;)

On that basis you should be using three core then - to cover any future needs (e.g. bonding)

If you are TT'ing the outbuilding, then obviously 2-core will do;)
