In the office again.
Just got new laptop
( old one went bye-byes.....bang!)

Its got windoze 8 on it.

When I try to install my email account, it tells me I need to install a digital certificate?

Where do I get that from, then?

I read one response that suggested turning ssl off - now the message is that " We can`t find settings for [email protected]"

So I can`t get to my email at the mo; unless I use webmail.

HELP.

Wait for Boat Boy to come along, I am sure he will have some nice suggestions  :innocent

2 people both said 8 was carp; but its on the new lappie :(

( I have been offered a copy of 7 instead...........what thinks y`all?

Steve: I`m "trying to put" the email account into the "email" program thing..........Why? Is there a better place to put it?

Well the windows login one for App's needs to be a microsoft email like Hotmail, I have opted for normal login.

I was still running Office 84 until last year, and it was a snide.
Okay, ridicule time.

I'm still running Office 97 on both my Windows XP desktop pc, and my wife's Vista laptop.

Simply because a previous employer gave us a paid for copy, and I'm simply too tight to pay for a newer version, and the old one works, and does all we want.

If some eejit sends us a file saved with a newer format, then I use the free Open Office to view those documents.

Back to Windows 8, there are plenty of programs (I REFUSE to call them apps) that will give you back the proper start menu etc. Some are free, others you have to pay for.

The built in wonderfully integrated mail client apparently only works on some IMAP and no POP mail servers. MS hope you will swap to an approved mail provider hotmail, gmail etc or buy an expensive version of office that includes outlook (works with all mail but wait for a metro version) .... but there are other alternatives. I understand you can download windows live mail for windows 7 and it will run ok on the desktop on 8 (provided you downloaded the right version eg intel processor 64bit for your laptop if you do so using another similarly equipt windows pc). Other email clients are also available

All in all pretty annoying and w8 is going to do wonders for mac book sales

I have to agree.  Vista is the only other occasion I've not updated all my PCs  to the new one (and I started that run with an upgrade to Windows 2.0).  I'm deeply into the technical side of networks and devices so naturally I would upgrade but on a 24inch widescreen monitor the Metro interface looks like it is from toyland, it's not a touch screen and I wont be dumping my mouse any time soon either.

Bigger issue is all the hidden charms and active corners of windows8 are going to drive the average mum/dad/Gran to distraction and having used Mac's and PC's if I was asked for a recommendation for a straightforward laptop /pc today and windows8 was the only option it would have to be a recommendation to go with a Mac.  (Yes I've used linux too but it is still too much trouble for a simple user)

The Tech forums are full of techies and programmers calling other techies and programmers fools and  dinosaurs for 'not quickly/easily learning the new ways' but they forget their market (rather than their peers) dont have the time or inclination to learn a more complicated to way to do what they already knew how to do . .

I just hope microsoft never launch a consumer unit :) . . .  can you imagine !

:slap

that has got to be a mis-type,

I know absolutely less than nothing about computers and I run Ubuntu on all mine, and Edubuntu on the little one's,

its easy and straightforward, and does exactly what you want it to, nothing more, nothing less, and unlike windoze, nothing else.!

I was trying to do something on the wifes work laptop last week [W7}, but gave up after 5 minutes of it keeping asking me if I was sure, and did I really want to do that, too convoluted.

people only use windoze cos they are scared of change, plus the fact it gets pushed with virtually every new PC.

notwithstanding the fact that there are certain programms that have never been ported outside windoze of course.

Steps, et al, (Linux stalwarts!) ;) ,

I tried to install a programme on Linux last week, & gave up.

The download was a tarball, I had to go through the read me file to learn how to compile it to an installable application, then compile it from the command line, then follow the install instructions in the file.

Not very user friendly, safe, and robust, but not easy to use?

I'm not sure of all the exact details as I was in a rush to get the thing working and could not, and have not yet had chance to spend a day trying to learn how to do this, I have to earn a living, not learn Linux! ;)

yea, well, you are the one that proves the rule sidey,

you are not the everyday user, most tarballs [and they can be a nightmare sometimes/mostly] can be found as .debs too, depending on your flavour,

and, you were probably putting some specialised prog on,

:D

Badger - XP was and still is stable, however it's old and things get better, the Morris Minor still runs but that does not mean it's efficient. W7 & W8 are very stable, never had any issues with either.

No good living in the past, move on.
