I've got a stat to wire in the morning, the old stat is already off and its just the three cables red/yellow/blue, how do I know which cable is which?

How do you know? if you don't mind me asking, is it just a common way of wiring them up?

there are 2 types of stat available. those which need a neutral, those which dont. the stat you have can be used with or without neutral. this one can also be a pain to wire due to the lack of space (ive fitted a few of these)

best check wiring, but its common for it to be

red - perm live

yellow - swithced live

blue - neutral

in which case, connect as The Godfather has said.

if no neutral, just dont connect to 3

the neutral in this is used for a small heater, so it will work more efficiently. it will still work without. some need the neutral if its digital though or wont work at all

I fitted a stat that needed a neutral, only to discover that the previous stat only needed line and switch live with the neutral cut right back  , so I managed to get a crimp on the stub of the existing neutral and then connected a neutral to the stat, had no complaints so far Guiness Drink

honey wells are generally 2 wire stats but there is room for a neutral but not needed, most are switcing on 1-3 and neutral to 4 .. but there are a few that differ. solas N-1 L-2 Switch -3 and so on .

Unfortunately you still don't know which cable is which, and neither do we. It should be as Andyc has said but if it was wired by a non sparkie it could be anything.

Really you need to look in the 12way connector box which most heating systems have, or possibly in the boiler. Look for the 3 core going to the stat and check the colours there.

You're lucky to have all three cores, the last one I changed, fitted by BG had a twin/earth, red = feed, black = neutral, bare earth wire with red sleeving = switchwire !!!!

hehe .. good init .. i would of guessed that 1 ... every one sleeves the dam earth for a switch .. lol..
