Hi,.  I want to wire up a outside light with Pir

i have ran cable from inside porch light to new outside light

connections in inside porch light are 2 reds in a terminal, 1 yellow  and 1 black in the same terminal and 1 blue in another plus earth terminals

can you please tell me what colours to connect my new cable to.

And you need to think about HOW you want the PIR light to operate?

You don't want it to only work when the porch light is turned on.

You don't want it to be powered all the time, what happens when it goes wrong or you need to change a lamp?

So you want another switch for the outside PIR light separate to the switch for the porch light.

I have a inside porch light that is switched.

i only want the new Pir outside light to be on when the sensor is activated

i want to switch the inside light on / off and still have the outside light working

taken light inside porch down and ran cable from this light to the new outside light.

connections inside porch are,

2 x red in a connector

1 yellow & 1 black in the same connector

1 x blue in another connector

plus earths

what terminals do I connect my new cable to in order to get the outside light on?

cheers

But you don't say where these connectors connect to, in particular which ones connect to the porch light fitting and which ones do nothing other than join two of the wires together.

The inside porch light connections are between the blue and the yellow/black and this light is switched

the 2 reds have nothing coming out of them

First you said the reds were "in a terminal" and now you say they have "nothing coming out of them" [Whatever that means..]

Start again...

Now, TOTALLY IGNORE the wires that ARE PART OF THE PORCH LIGHT. What colour are the actual wires that "poke out of the house" that go to the light.

john..

Hi, . I have 2 cables coming out of the wall into the inside porch light.

1 cable is from the switch, core colours are red, yellow and black.

the other cable is a feed to the garage light, core colours are red and black.

these 2 cables have been put into connector block.

2 reds togeather

black & yellow togeather

blue on its own

Plus earths.

i have put another cable from the new outside Pir light to this connector block and would like to know what terminals to connect my new cable to so that the Pir light works even if the inside porch light is switched off.

hope this makes more sense

cheers

On the face of it you'd connect your PIR light to the Red & Bk  coming from the garage , as they sound like the  L& N   .

Where did the Blue suddenly come from ?    Are you sure the switch drop isn't Red - Yell- Blue   not black?

You need to check out what the wires do with a tester ,  but we can't recommend LIVE testing  unless you are competent to do it .

Unless you have already have a L&N  into the switch ....a R - Yell - Blu  to your porch light .  Yell is N  , R is L  ...Blu is the S/W   .

None of us can tell really without seeing it .

I think he is describing ONLY the existing wires not the new wire to the outside light.

I would guess it is like you say Deke with the 3 core as the switch drop, but by my reconing that makes Red L, Blue switched live, and Yellow Neutral.  Why would you include neutral on a switch drop?

I think all we can say with certainty is what you have is a bit unusual. It would take us just a couple of minutes with a tester to establish exactly what is what, but without being there, none of us can be certain what you have so can give no guarantees.

Hello,.     Opened the. Switch and there are 2 cables

1 from mains & 1 to inside porch light.

connections are ;

mains cable, red into switch & black into a connector block.

cable to light, red with other red onto switch,

blue to other side of switch,

yellow into connector block with black

Okay, so at the LIGHT, the 3 core cable is Red = permanent L, Blue = swirtched L and Yellow = neutral.  It's wired "loop at switch" with a rather unusual practice of also feeding a permanent L to the light.

So, you want to connect your outside PIR light L to the red and N to the yellow.

You have a highly unusual method of looping a feed from one light to another which is why it sounded so confusing to start with.
