Would the following change technically work? Or will I blow my house up if power it returned to the system?!

Looks to me as if you don't have a neutral at the switch so no it won't work. If you connect the neutral to the earth you'll trip the RCD

Choose a different smart switch that does not need a neutral. Some work by charging a battery from L / SL when the load is turned off.
the switch isn't suitable for the wiring you have. you need to either replace the wiring or the switch

Or get a 3 core and earth down to the switch from light fitting thereby giving neutral at switch

Shouldn't the SonOff be installed in the ceiling behind the rose, where L, N and E are available ?
