    2365 L3 (in 2 weeks); I have 17th Edition & ECS card

Hello, I am looking to work as an electrician's mate. Within 2 weeks I will finish C&G 2365 Level 3 (started September 2015). I have been studying a lot and have good knowledge of science, design and inspection and testing. My next objectives are: NVQ, AM2, JIB Gold card. I have 17th...

Insulation resistance test on live circuit

Aha that's right, sorry. :D Thanks Dave, very interesting. It does sound very complicated. I should ask him again and quote your posts (Andy and Dave).

Insulation resistance test on live circuit

So I could measure current and apply Ohm's law. To get significant values in megohms at, for instance, 400 V I would need an instrument that can measure extremely low values of current. 400 V / 0.0004 A = 1 megohm.

Insulation resistance test on live circuit

Obviously the circuit/installation tested should be safely isolated, but... This is the story: our tutor asked us to find out how insulation resistance can be done on a live circuit. He had to do it once to test several circuits at a military base, and the "client" specifically requested that...

    Manchester?

Ok now I'm confused... I thought it was a decent place but you are telling me it's a ****hole. How did you form this opinion? If it wasn't for the ridiculous traffic congestion and the larcenous cost of putting a roof over my head, I wouldn't mind living in London. Manchester is cheaper and...

    Manchester?

Thank you Evans and ProDave, you convinced me. :) Sure I could avoid big cities, but I can't live in a place that is too ethnically homogeneous and/or monocultural. My spirit would suffocate. Have a look at this page...

    Manchester?

Hello, I moved from Italy to London 4 years ago. I am about to complete level 3 and will complete NVQ within the year. Since I moved here I've only visited Edinburgh, Bath and Brighton, so I have no idea what the North West looks like. I was reading about Manchester and my impression is that it...

Service cable, service head, meter tails

Thank you Sharpend and apprentice87! Yes I'm still a student, hated by my teacher because I ask too many questions. That's why sometimes I have to come here and ask questions (and I always try to find the answers first, books + Internet usually does the trick). I totally agree about your...

Service cable, service head, meter tails

I wouldn't worry too much about people like me who study and ask questions when they don't know, and keep reading and studying to learn as much as possible. I would worry about all these electricians who know, but are not bothered to work properly, or who don't know and don't care. I had this...

Thank you guys, clear and concise as always, and a nice picture. :)

Service cable, service head, meter tails

Hello, I looked everywhere but I'm still not 100% sure about the difference between: service cable, service head, meter tails. I thought the service head was the bit of cable between the meter and the main CCU, but then what are the meter tails? I've got 17th Edition tomorrow, good...

    17th Edition, third harmonics question

I think Amendment 3 introduced a regulation that prohibits that, I would be careful. :D

    17th Edition, third harmonics question

Ahah, I only had to divide by the factor in the table then. I was reading 5.5.2. Thank you for your help roys. :) For your information, Appendix 11 was deleted by Amendment 1 and moved to Appendix 4, secs 5.5 and 5.6.

    17th Edition, third harmonics question

Hello, I will take 17th Edition soon and I was doing practice questions with a simulator. The only answer I got wrong was the third harmonics one, I read it on the Regs but I don't get it. Would you be able to help me with a demonstration of the calculatioins needed to find the answer? Where a...

    17th Edition exam only?

This is from a thompson training, they offer the normal course (£400) and distance learning (£200). Their website looks very legitimate, they also have the normal courses. Looks like I'll have to phone City & Guilds to find out, I'm really confused. :D
