    What to do.

Thanks guys. Is there any benefit of me doing the installation NVQ or would I be wasting my time? Also would you know what quals are needed to get involved with air source heat pumps?

    What to do.

Hi guys I’m at one of the funny times in my career where I can’t decide on what I want to do. I’m wondering if one of you experiences folks can offer some advice. Here’s a bit about me: I’m now 27, I did an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering 17-21 a lot of metal work fabrication welding...

Working on site and the relevant cards.

Hi guys, I’m wondering if you can help. I’m looking to get on site and switch from maintenance to installations and require a ecs card. At the moment I can get the JIB gold card as a maintenance electrician with my quals, but have been told by the company I will be doing work for to go for the...

    Going from maintenance to domestic/commercial

From my understanding you need to now have a NVQ level 3 in installations or similar. I checked with napit as I’ve got the test and inspection and the NVQ in electrical engineering maintenance (which isn’t accepted.)

    Experienced worker route

I am forever being told the only way I can become recognised as an electrician is to have the NVQ level 3 which is industry standard. I never completed any level 2 qualifications as my background was in engineering then I transitioned more to the electrical maintenance/installation side. I just...

Well the level 3 NVQ which allows you to gain the gold card?

    Experienced worker route

Hi guys wondering if you could point me in the right direction. I’ve had 5 years +experience within the electrical industry. A lot has been electrical maintenance but also have experience with domestic and industrial installations. I have the following qualifications: HNC in...

    Soft starter

only one motor is causing a the tripping. I wanted to eliminate the soft start being the issue so I swapped motors across the soft starts and the one I had the issue with still did the same thing on the second soft start.

Sorry if I have made this unclear I have 2 blowers each run by their individual soft start and motor. These are identical bits of kit. The blower is driven via V belt.

Can I ask why a MFT on low ohms is not sufficient? And it’s a V belt I haven’t gone down to stripping anything down yet as it seems to be working fine now. Just wanted to understand the theory to why it was happening.

    Soft starter

No it’s just one. They are identical blowers. The fan rotated freely. There is no fault code on the Soft start due to the breaker tripping before anything else. ( I don’t think selectivity has been corrected accounted for as we have 63amp BS88 fused at the fused disconnect then 50 amp type C...

    Soft starter

It’s intermittent though. It doesn’t always happen so it’s hard to measure anything electrically when it does happen as it happens so quick. No I haven’t I haven’t got a tachometer in my tool box unfortunately.

I am sure the windings are balanced. I checked on my MFT and all values were identical. So what measurements are you suggesting? Measuring the resistance of the cable from the output of the soft start to the motor? Thanks @Sidewinder

    Soft starter

Off the top of my head approx 15kW. Motor moves freely. For the winding resistance I’m getting very low ohms 0.0ohms and IR >999meg to phases to earth and tested at the motor in between all 3 windings >999meg
