Hi

I'm replacing a number of fluorescent batten lights with LED ones. I've done one room and it was fine. But I'm now doing two in the garage and have hit a problem.

One of the existing lights had four cables running into it from the ceiling, each with a live a neutral and an earth (or at least each with a red, black and green/yellow wire).

I made the cardinal sin of not taking a photo of how these wires connected to the existing light before removing it and can't work out how to connect the new light.

The new light just needs a live and a neutral. However, from the four cables I have, there is one red wire and two black ones available - the rest are all connected to each other. It's difficult to explain the connections in text so I've attached a photo that hopefully makes it clear.

Let's call the two "free" black wires "a" and "b", where "a" is the one that comes directly from the white cable and "b" is the one that comes from the connector block.

I've tried attaching the red wire + black wire "a" and red wire + black wire "b" but neither combinations work. I assume I need to use all three wires but don't know how - I haven't tried joining black wires "a" and "b" then connecting red wire + combined black wires "a" and "b" as am not sure whether that will have an unexpected result I don't want.

Could anyone advise please? And yes, I know it's frustrating for qualified electricians to have unqualified folk like me asking these questions. But I thought it this would be a simple job - most of it was, but I rushed this part and am now left with no working lights in the garage which I need to fix quickly and am hoping to avoid calling someone out for something that might be simple!

Thanks very much in advance

Labelled up your picture for clarity

So switched live and live to other fitting connected to live on fitting then the neutral and earth to each of the other connections
The black switched live should really be marked with red tape or sleeving

If that's how it was connected originally, then it looks like your labels are correct, and the red and black go together so they all switch on from a single point
