    Telephone on Cat 6 cable

I would run the cat6 as normal for both voice and data back to a patch panel. That way any outlet can be used for any function. Run a normal phone cable from the BT master socket to a suitable junction box next to the patch panel. Then using RJ11 to RJ11 cables cut in half take as many...

    domestic data points?

I like them due to their "plug and play" nature also most offer strong encryption between each module so its a pretty secure solution. :D

    domestic data points?

Cat5e is fine for outside although if security is a concern it's maybe not a good idea as it would be easy to physically connect to the householders network from outside. Rather than running cable I'm a big fan of Ethernet over power. They work a treat and are portable. http://www.devolo.co.uk

    domestic data points?

Sorry to be picky but a switch operates at layer2 of the OSI model and forwards frames a router operates at layer three and forwards packets. ;)

    Earthing Arrangement- confused

So if the distribution is underground. How do they decide how many aditional earth electrodes to install between the transformer and the consumers installation?

    Earthing Arrangement- confused

This is an interesting thread. Can I ask slighly different but hopefully related question? Where the distribution network is PME how do the DNO physically achieve the additional connections to earth along the length of the supply cable?

    5 week wonders

For what it's worth I think that certain people with the right ability can learn the technical aspects of being an electrician in 5 weeks especially if they already have a relevant technical background. What you can't learn in 5 weeks is the craft aspects of the trade.

    5 week wonders

I'm not a spark I suppose I could be described as a diyer (isn't everyone when they do work that another trade would usually do). I always wanted to be a spark as a boy, not sure why. Got pushed down the academic route and went to university to do electrical engineering but made an a*se of...

    HD Box

I use devices that extend Scart over cat5. They are great devices as they also extend the Infra Red. http://www.bluedelta.co.uk/ For HD you'll get similar devices that do HDMI.

    Broadband

Yeah, It's a bit like the way UTP cable is refered to as ethernet cable.

It's fair to say that outside the telecomms industry the 8P8C modular plug used in voice and data cabling has come to be commonly known as RJ45 although as you rightly say it is not.

    Equal rights for the Scots.

It's just like England but colder and the pubs are open longer :D Oh and we get an extra day off at new year.

The beauty about ethernet over power adapters is they are so cheap and easy that they are worth a try even if they don't work. They can always be reused or flogged. Have a look on EBAY and search for "comtrend powerline adapter"

Assuming that the barn has power from the house, why not use a couple of Ethernet over power adapters.

    Would you move?

Thats almost as picturesque as Scotland! ;)

    Equal rights for the Scots.

Good question as an aspiring spark I'd like to get a definative answer on that. Hopefully some of my more learned kins folk will answer. My understanding is that to comply with Scottish building regs all electrical work has to comply with BS7671 and as long it it does then its OK. That does...

    Caravan site supply question

Out of interest. What's on the bollard? Is it a 16amp do Socket with a small CU inside the Van or is the CU on the bollard somehow?
