Andy, What is the difference from an EIC and a PIR?? Why is a PIR dated after the final date of any works carried out any less valid than an EIC?? Other than the form that gets stapled to front of the report... I know it's the regs but WHY?? EIC, PIR, PAT all worth the paper they are...

    Alarm installation

Now... the tamper... theres a thing. I understand the tamper circuit but: Why would you need four zones as a tamper? Do you just short out any left over zones as part of the tamper circuit??

And another thing! Why is a PIR not acceptable anyway? (And this may be a Part P thing) surely a proper PIR constitutes a full test of the entire electrical installation regardless of who has done the original installation or any additions... elvis is most definately in the building! ?:-/

In Scotland... no Part P here... but I thought that was supposed to be the whole point to Part P. The regs are the regs and are not legally binding but are widely accepted as a guide to good working practices and as such could be cited in a court blah, blah, blah... But I thought Part P was...

    Scottish Power RANT

Know what you mean, and I am the only one who feels that they don't want to talk to the electrician on the phone... rather speak to the clueless bill-payer perhaps?? I have an emergency number for them and I try to find an excuse to use that. Worrying noise, a wee bit hot, safety check...

    screw fix cable

I actually knew someone at CEF before I started up on my own and took them at their word that they would look after me. They were, and are, absolutely shameless... I had a call from them last week trying to get me back in. Quoted them what I'm paying for various things and he said he would...

So what about window/door magnets, they are all wired individually back to the panel? Was always under the impression they were wired in a loop...

    Alarm installation

That's always what I thought, drilling door frames etc. Do you have a general practice of wiring all of your cable in a physical loop or do you wire them all back to the box and join them in there? Or (again) does this change from job to job?

    Testing circuits for certs/PIR

It is covered in the 'Extent and Limitations of the Inspection' section on your PIR certificate and is to be agreed with the client. I know this is a personal call but I was told when doing my inspection and testing that 10% was acceptable (unless the client specifically asked for more) and...

    3 phase amp reading

They should all be pretty much the same, if you are noticing a radical difference in one or all three readings then you should get the motor checked out... Out of interest (I can be a bore) what is the motor running and what readings are you getting? Should be big pats on the back for you from...

    Alarm installation

They're v. good some of these guys! Alarm installer, prob knows his job v. well but not so up to scratch with the actual electrical part of it. It's one job I've never done and always meant to look a bit more into it. Made minor repairs to a few and been asked a few times and always said no...
