Told one of my jobs was non-compliant & I had ripped off my customer

I feel so sorry for that neutral bar. There it is, all dressed up, ready for the big day... sees the cpcs going in, thinks, "Here we go!" then... nothing. Realises it's the fag tray on a motorbike, the chocolate teapot, the number 9 on a microwave keypad. Poor neutral bar :(

    Spot the fault™

Phases on incoming side of fuses don't match those on the load side. That's ok though, as one of the fuses is 180 degree out of phase, thus cancelling out the error ;)

Crabtree VO-ELCB - retain as isolator?

The one in the property for sale, the only photo I have is the one I posted at the top of this thread so I don't know I'm afraid. I won't be going back for a while (even assuming the sale goes ahead). The photo of the one with the overload on, is from the web page by John Ward, linked above the...

Crabtree VO-ELCB - retain as isolator?

Thanks, yes, I agree. I hadn't noticed that the version installed was different from the one John Ward took apart. Perhaps Crabtree did two versions - one with overload, one without? I suspect I wasn't even born when they did so ;)

Crabtree VO-ELCB - retain as isolator?

Ah yes, thank you. I was sure it said "O/L" somewhere on it, but I see now that was the one JW took apart!

Crabtree VO-ELCB - retain as isolator?

Thanks Andy, Rob and Tony. Labelling up is a good idea - perhaps covering over the text that says, "Test this protective switch often by pressing the yellow button. If it does not switch off inform your electrical contractor." A label advising that the earth leakage protective nature of the...

Crabtree VO-ELCB - retain as isolator?

Assuming the property sale goes ahead as planned, I'll have the pleasure of rewiring a lovely riverside wooden chalet on the Broads. The current installation is a little - shall we say, dated? The TT installation has an up-front Crabtree VO-ELCB: Assuming it works as a switch, I was...

    Nest? Hive? Anything else?

I know a sample size of one isn't much help, but we have a Honeywell wireless stat that works very nicely with our combi (by chance, same model as you). If we're away for a while I just flick the mode switch down to "off" (actually 5ºC). If one of us is in during the day rather than out, then we...

    Social integrator

Eh up :) I can understand the use of these tools to increase traffic to the site, which is good because it keeps it going for everyone to enjoy. As a newbie on this board, interested and wanting to join in (once I've found my feet), not being able to ignore/turn off notifications is...

    What on Earth?

Only for circuits intended to supply one or more items of equipment, such that the total protective conductor current is likely to exceed 10mA, where the requirement is met by having two individual protective conductors, each complying with the requirements of Section 543. Otherwise: do what...

    3.14159265358979 is too complicated:

Nah, it's to do with natural logarithms. e is a constant, about 2.718. e is equal to (1+(1/n))^n, as n approaches infinity. Stuff on Wikipedia.

    3.14159265358979 is too complicated:

It still does my head in how e^(π√(-1)) = -1. Chuck lots of complicated stuff together, end up with something simple.

Light fixture hanging down by 1cm

Toggle bolts (spring toggles) are sometimes the only thing that will work when all else fails (particularly on lath and plaster).

    Happy Steve saying hello

I'm all about the friendly. I'm the sort of person who sees the best in people (or likes to, at any rate). Hence, "happy steve". :) I hope you'll find my attitude is not out of whack. I like to learn stuff, and give help where I can. Everyone's got their strengths, and weaknesses. My...

    Happy Steve saying hello

Thank you! Hmm... I was going to upload some PDF-fillable model forms I'd knocked up to the TEF resources section, but I see there's some on there already for £4 a pop... don't want to ruffle any feathers so will leave it for now.

Thank you both. Appreciate the offer, Tony. Beer is good. :) Just finding my way around at the moment. Already found some great stuff in the knowledgebase. Cheers! :)

    Happy Steve saying hello

Thank you. :) Yeah, it's like I'm Marty McFly and I've stepped into the future, with the DP single module RCBOs. I understand that some things are technically challenging; and that usually there's a trade-off between price and specification... but the general lack of DP RCBOs (or even MCBs)...

    Happy Steve saying hello

Eh up :) ~waves~ I'm Steve, Nottingham-based. Electrician, though not time-served/no NVQ so up for debate I guess. A smattering of C&G quals, MEng in Electronic Engineering, and a tutor for C&G electrotechnical qualifications (2365, 17th etc). Stroma registered, and MIET. I like a...
