I always find it reassuring to say the words click click when tightening things up, the virtual torque settings never fails😀

Trade Garage & van sale coming soon

I think because generally speaking we are technical people who can fix things and there not as many of us about in modern society, once people realise you have a bit of time the neighbours will be bringing you things to fix. I always seem to be busy and never ask for payment but there is always...

    Electric test fail.

I recently had a broken ring fault at my mates house, to be fair my mate suspected something was up when he saw the plumber mucking about with a Wago box a month earlier when he was fitting a new boiler. I checked it out yip open circuit on ring. What I suspect happened was the plumber core...

    Electric test fail.

How much time and rigor was spent on the last test? It has been known, not personally, for £75 to be paid and the tester not even get out of his van, called a drive by. A proper test should take hours and cost a lot more than £75. Maybe you had a better tester this time.

    HNC question

What does your tutor suggest. It will need a decent level of complexity and detail as it is the HNC. I remember many years ago (1991) mine involved a plant addition that had a couple of fairly decent sized motors that required 70mm cables after I did the cable calls, It also involved Foxboro PID...

    Weird Voltage reading

Swop the dimmer switch for a normal switch then do your testing, or even disconnect the dimmer and connect the live and switched live together into a Wago or terminal block, this will allow you to check for voltage at the fitting. It would be remiss of me not to say isolate before changing your...

    Buried SWA

Mmmmm, worked on Haz Area kit most of my working life, been retired for a few years now so unless things have changed in recent years we always earthed the armour at both ends, any earth missing on the plant end would be picked up on haz area inspections and remedial action would have to be...

Proven WT6000 Wind Turbine and FIT + Deemed Export Queries

From memory did these Provens not have the folding blades, so that when the wind got too strong they simply folded in to protect against overspeed as opposed to furling, if I am correct then one of the weak points was the springs breaking that held the blades in the correct position. Also from...

    Drill taps

I have seen them used on the likes of the American car restoration shows, but it just doesn’t sit right with me. Reason being we were always taught to go forward about 3/4 turn then back 1/4 of a turn to break the chip. Of course it might be that things have changed in the 45 years since I was...

    Heavy grid loading today

On the 13th Jan residents in Alberta Canada were asked not to use any heavy loads such as EV chargers and electric space heating due to grid limitations. To compound this I imagine the range on EVs will be right down due to a lot of the battery energy being used to heat the drivers and passenger...

Wiring advice for a Metal Muncher

Flipping heck that rumpatec is expensive, wonder how many cable stands I have made over the years out of bits of off cut timber and a piece of metal conduit, quite a few, cost zero.

GOV.UK advice on Rented properties for smoke alarms.

Fairly certain in Scotland the rule is now all houses to have interlinked detectors, but they do not need to be mains ones. I have fitted Aico in my own place but friends and family have gone down the 10 year sealed battery unit route, very easy to fit and install, pair them all up on the...
