    Light switch recommendations

I need a new round flush-mounted ceiling pull-cord switch with neon for a 23W shower extractor fan. The fan has a timed overrun, hence the need for neon (and/or mechanical indicator) as otherwise I'll forget whether I've turned it off or not. Screwfix stock the usual suspects... BG, Crabtree, MK...

12V lighting transformer with no load

OK thanks, so I'll probably just disconnect the lamps for now (still worth saving 3 x 40W or whatever they are, even if the transformer continues to waste a bit) but then I'll look to get the transformer taken out sooner rather than later.

12V lighting transformer with no load

I have three 12V halogen downlights on the landing which share the same transformer if I remember correctly. The switch for those also controls a separate light fitting on the stairs, which I've just 'upgraded' with 3 x 5W LED lamps. Given that the halogens are expensive to run (plus safety...

Replacing Low Voltage Spotlights... Who's Right?

Wow, quick responses, thank you everyone for your comments. Some reassuring points there and good to know the quotes are competitive. A few votes for Mister C too, which I'm quite pleased about because he seemed like a good guy and I just had a better feeling from his visit compared to the other...

Replacing Low Voltage Spotlights... Who's Right?

Well, I've just got a few quotes for what I thought essentially boiled down to some rewiring, and blimey, it's a mixed bag, ranging from £120 to 400. And I'm confused, so if anyone in the know is willing to read the details and give me their thoughts, I'd be grateful. To give it some context...

    Thermostat Wiring

Job done.  :-)  Seems a good unit, plenty of features, pretty logical and straightforward to program. I just need to get used to the cycling on & off for just a minute or so at a time, which I gather is intentional behaviour and does seem to maintain quite a stable temperature, even though...

    Thermostat Wiring

Thanks Rob_the_rich, much appreciated.  Yes it has battery backup which lasts "for the life of the product" (although it's a Li button cell in a standard clasp holder on the PCB so looks like it could be replaced if needed).  :-) No earth terminal on the backplate so will choc block that too...

    Thermostat Wiring

Right, after all that deliberation, I've gone for a Danfoss TP7001.  Not a bad price, and there are just too many reports out there about failed displays on the CM907. I'd be grateful for a quick sense-check on the wiring for this one... I know this is simple stuff but I'd rather be sure I'm...

    Thermostat Wiring

No I wasn't saying the CH and water don't work properly.  Just that I've decided to replace my old room stat with a programmable one (for various reasons), so I was just after a bit of advice about wiring up the new stat, which ProDave kindly advised on (before I found out about the Honeywell...

    Thermostat Wiring

Umm... not sure I'm following!?  Which changes did you mean?

    Thermostat Wiring

Yes that's useful to know, thanks... seems people only have good things to say about this stat, and I see there's a TP5000M mains version although bit dearer and not so widely available for some reason.  Not quite as many features as the Honeywell (e.g. backlight, overrides, timed holiday mode...

    Thermostat Wiring

Thanks ProDave, makes sense.  I expect I'll need a terminal for the earth as well, as AFAIK the CM907 doesn't provide anywhere to park it, unlike some. About the battery power, I've not been able to find a mains equivalent to the CM907... unless I'm missing something, it looks like Honeywell...

    Thermostat Wiring

I'm planning to replace my old dial thermostat (Honeywell T6360) with a programmable one.  I've been considering the Danfoss TP5000, Honeywell CM907 and Salus RT500.  The Honeywell is pricey but looking favourite in terms of features and reviews (any views on that welcome though).  I have a...

    Help! Mcb Tripping...

Oh yes, forgot about that switch (hiding behind stuff) ... thanks, that was it!  Note to self - remember to check the painfully obvious... Thanks again.

    Help! Mcb Tripping...

Well... let me bring you all up to date.  I tried the extension lead thing - that was uneventful as nothing tripped, same with swapping the two 32A MCBs.  The next thing that happened was that the dishwasher wouldn't turn on.  Everything else on the circuit was still on.  Decided to try swapping...

    Help! Mcb Tripping...

No it's not - the one before it was frost free and went kaput, and I read that they can be problematic so avoided that feature, handy though it is.

    Help! Mcb Tripping...

Not yet - need to get a longer lead.  I'll be working through all the suggestions starting with the easiest first. :) Yeah, maybe you're right, I just know what swine some of these companies can be if there's any wriggle room and of course sporadic electrical faults can be hard to replicate if...

    Help! Mcb Tripping...

I think the last one was a cold rainy day, but we also had it when the weather was hot (and the neighbour reckoned it was the heat that'd done it...). Don't know where we stand if it is the fridge freezer... I mean assuming the f-f is faulty in some way, we'll have a job on proving that (it's...
