Can I put a camera on my wall looking over

This may come as a silly suggestion, talk to your neighbours and find out if they have any objections to cameras. They may back you if they have the same fly tipping problem. You never know, they could even follow your lead.

    Switching Off From Work

I could never relax after work. I’d got all the plants PLC programs at home so I could carry on working on them undisturbed. I was drunk when I came up with a transportation multi-decision program, surprisingly it worked first time. I’m not going to say what state I was in for some of the other...

What type of cable needed for connection to campsite 500m from power supply?

Work out the weight of the cable and then decide if you can handle the pull in. 1kM of 3.3kV 35mm² 3c SWA worked out at four tons. 500M of 185mm² SWA is going to be a damn site heavier.

    Y to K or was it Y2K?

The cars we bought as apprentices to get to college were wrecks, no MOT’s back then. When the mini’s drivers side door fell off we just tied it on the roof with T+E. What do you expect for £5? The only computer on the works was a Ferranti Argos 100, it would fill my bedroom nowadays. You used a...

    Y to K or was it Y2K?

I’m convinced the Y2K panic was deliberately started by IT consultants to boost trade. Our companies IT department certainly panicked the plant management by saying they hadn’t the time to check all the process control gear. I got lumbered with the job and couldn’t find any problems. The proof...

Another query , non - electrical

You can still get two dozen N2O sparklet bulbs by mail order for £9-95. So much for it being a controlled substance.

    Years come and go:

Where is this next year going to lead us? BREXIT is a day away and we “the common people” haven’t a bloody clue what’s going on. At least there seems to be an agreement on VAT but where does that leave us with rest of the world. The last item I bought from the USA I was walloped with import...

Another query , non - electrical

It’s less harmful than methamphetamines which is rife around here, as is ketamine along with other nasties. Why anyone would take ketamine for fun is beyond me, it’s a horse tranquiliser! That said, it’s the only anaesthetic that works on me, pethidine has no effect.

Another query , non - electrical

They’re nitrous oxide N2O canisters (laughing gas). They are used to make whipped cream (officially), other uses are recreational. They’re all over the place around here.

    A Christmas puzzle

Are you sure they are LEDs? Refraction of light from the inner candle could account for the sparkly bits.

Petition to force pubs and entertainment industry to close Christmas day

Totally impractical in many industries. Most plants run 24/7, a shutdown would be ruinously expensive.

Thought I'd wrapped up last week .........

You want time off at christmas, how selfish can you get? After I came out of my time I was on shift for 16 christmases in a row but the money and the food made up for it. Cooking turkey and beef under a cement kiln is an art. My shift fitter and I would be racing around between plants...

    Work in the new year

As you say, when you’re employed it is far easier to find a new employer. As for redundancy, the first time I left voluntarily after 23 years (I threatened to set fire to the MD’s car if he didn’t let me go). Second time there was 400 of us in the queue.

Maintenance free JBs ( So called)

If they are what I’m thinking of, they had french chalk on them to stop them sticking together on the reel. Cables with tarred hessian serving had whitewash on them, after making them off you could have passed an audition for the black & white minstrels.

So this has got me thinking ...( variation on a theme . I suppose )

It’s called spot price. I buy silver based on spot which changes every five minutes, you have to keep an eye on the ball. The election caused chaos.

Maintenance free JBs ( So called)

First time I came across this type of connector was 20 years ago on Telemecanique switchgear. OK the control current wasn’t high, the temperature in the breaker coil section was. The heat hadn’t affected them. My only gripe was I had to do a lot of modifications, getting connections undone...

    Neutral Earthing at source

One of the reasons for locating the N→E link at the switchboard is so Restricted Earth Fault protection can be utilized.
