    Noob alert

My version of a Bloody Mary: ⅓ Vodka ⅔ Tomato juice Tabasco. Celery salt. White pepper. NO Worstershire sauce, I won’t even allow the damned stuff in the house!

    Credit cards

The Nasty West introduced charges for cheques 45 years back. They found themselves with no customers. I moved my business and personal accounts elsewhere. I now get better interest on my current account than my savings account….?

Finance ...interest rate down again .

Buy low when you're gut feeling says so. Another way of looking at it, I bought the last 10 ozT bar from a colonial country on the UK market for a reasonable price. You  have to watch the market. I buy to acquire for my son, not to sell. If he chooses to sell it is up to him.

Finance ...interest rate down again .

Precious metals prices are spiralling down, time to start buying again except I’ve spent this months allowance. The economy is a mess and not all of the UK’s doing.

Turn light automatically on through vibration sensor

I can think of several ways to do this, the bottom line is how much are you willing to spend? It isn’t going to be cheap.

    Swapping an MCB

That’s a pain in the bum proving qualifications. I had to gain an Associateship to the Royal Photographic Society to get PI insurance, PL was no problem. ARPS is one down to a fellowship.

    Cable zones anyone?

It took me a fortnight to find where someone had wrapped a bin bag around a 50mm² SWA they had damaged. It hadn’t gone bang as I’d isolated the cable ready to extend it another 75m. I did the joint and powered the cable up with no problem. Middle of the night it blew the fuses, next morning I’m...

    Espares

As is maintenance, we keep the business going, do we get any credit? I’ve had to deal with disgruntled customers after hours. I even had to go on a customer care course? WTGrape, I keep the plant going, I don’t sell the cr@p! Several years later I went in to production management. What a pain...

    Embarrassment avoidance today .

30 + years back I installed a 100kKVR capacitor, the end of the cable run was through a 2” elbow in to the cable box. Testing a PFC capacitor is a bit hit and miss so just switch on. Everything was fine until the great white chief showed up and asked how I’d got a 70mm² 3c through the elbow. He...

    Engineer to Electrician?

What sort of an electrician do you want to be? Domestic you’ll be wasting your talents. Industrial will give you something to tax the grey matter. There’s a heap of **** on your shoulders and lots of decisions to be made, some costing £xxxk per hour if you get it wrong.

    "Consecutive" Voltage Drops

It’s called cumulative volt drop. PM your e-mail address and I’ll send a spreadsheet. BTW, it’s why we adopted the ring main.

    Junction boxes size

There are no regulations that I’m aware of. Common sense has to be used to gauge ease of access to terminals.

    Hydroponics - yup

Tubular heaters are useless in a greenhouse, all the heat is lost. Later I used Reychem heat tape in the “hot bed”, I wouldn’t say it was great success but it worked in a sort of fashion. Frank (FiL) also grew chrysanthemum flowers to show at competitions, that’s another story.

    Hydroponics - yup

My late farther in law wanted heating in his greenhouse for his tomato seedlings. So I built a hot bed for him. The first electricity bill arrived and it doubled that quarters consumption.

    So what now?

Why do you think I'm buying silver? A hedge against the pound collapsing.

    Couple questions

What training centre? Many have a reputation as rip off merchants. I’m sorry but many of the older members on here served four or five year apprenticeships and I don’t think any of us have stopped learning. That said, we will help as and when we can.

Brexit ! British car industry non existence ,make it on our own !

Somewhere I’ve got a claim form with “not to be used for future reference!” written across it. I’d hit the same concrete post twice, each time ripping the nearside wing off.
