Electric shower fault, Mira Advance Thermostatic

Some people describe it as a 'fishy' smell, some say it smells a bit like TCP, either way it means something is overheating inside the switch, if you remove the switch it will be obvious just by looking at it, obviously you MUST turn off the consumer unit (fuse box) first though, the issue isn't...

Can’t get outdoor lights to work!

even one of these would be better than a voltstick for him https://www.screwfix.com/p/lap-voltage-tester/3516f

    cooker off ring main

Could be a baby belling, well you never know. lol

    Remove exterior light.

The other advantage of that is it's really easy to fit another light if you change your mind later.

Help! DIY alarm fix Abacus 8

Could be a tamper problem, some alarms will operate to disarm them but then lock out if the tamper is open circuit, worth checking that out next. but that wouldn't cause the pir's not to light up has the fuse blown again?

Fan isolator switch replacement (3 pole)

A perfect example of why it's much better to take a 3 core from the light to the fan switch and another from there to the fan.

Can’t get outdoor lights to work!

I think he means a voltstick, only trouble with one of those, as you know is it won't show a missing neutral, well not in the conventional sense, as you say he'd be better with a 2 pole tester, or a meter.

    Earth monitoring light

Yes I know, but I was thinking of something that could easily be fitted into a domestic property, must be more beneficial than half the carp they dream up in the regs. lol

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

There was somebody nearly got killed up here with something like that, apparently a contractor had installed a cable on behalf of the council or somebody, anyway he'd got hold of a load of this armoured cable with a blue outer sheath! He'd installed it and several months later someone was...

    Van substitute and storage

Exactly, because you looked after it, I've always had older vehicles, I won't waste money on a new one every few years, yet it always amazes me that I can have a 15 year old vehicle that's perfectly reliable, yet I hear of people with the same one having trouble after 4 or 5 years, it's down to...

    Earth monitoring light

Given that a lot of the time when we find problems such as a loss of earth, or a high earth loop value it's quite often down to the supply cable (incomer) I wonder why nobody has come up with a module to fit in a CU and monitor the earth, it wouldn't be that hard to do and I feel it would have a...

    SWMBO's Steam Cleaner

It's a capacitor/diode arrangement to stop interference and back emf when the solenoid opens and closes, it will run without it, worst case scenario it may cause interference with the radio or tv when it switches, a bit like in the good old days. lol

    Van substitute and storage

If you look after stuff it will last, the trouble these days is so many people treat the mot like it's some kind of annual service and rant on about how it cost £500 to get it through the test, because amongst other things it needed new pads and discs! Well perhaps if they'd taken a wheel off...

    ALDI

I ended up buying 2 of them, they have some really good attachments as you said. The first one only lasted a couple of days then it went, and I don't mean broke, lol, my grandson was helping his dad with some diy stuff and wanted a small cordless screwdriver, so I ended up giving him mine and...

    ALDI

That's the one, yes it will do TIG, but your gas flow would be constant, and could get expensive on the gas, on a proper tig the gas shuts off when you break the arc. I have thousands of pounds worth of high end tooling, from Kango breakers, through most types of power tool, usually all Makita...

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

I don't think the 'sheds' help to be honest, they're full of electrical stuff from an led lamp to a consumer unit, yet there's very little mention of the need to have things properly tested. I know it may be easy to swap a white plastic socket for a nice shiney chrome one, but what about testing...

    ALDI

I already have a rather expensive inverter welder that does stick and tig, however, I was in my local Aldi and they had one of their inverter welders left, it was reduced to £19.99, so I bought it. I don't do much welding these days, but I figured that if my other one does pack up at least this...

DIY Cable from Bungalow to outside garage

If the op is going to get some cheap meters, he may as well see if he can pick up a copy of the 17th edition regs too, I know they're out of date but given that not a lot has changed in the fundamental stuff it would give him an idea of why and how we do what we do.

    ALDI

I've had one from Aldi for years, but I bought another one recently from them, only because the new one comes in a hard plastic case, my old one didn't and it kept getting switched on and flattening the battery.
