PYRO.......question for Deke and eldest child only ( possibly)

If ever you need it there is a conversion chart for fitting metric terminations to imperial cable here http://www.pyrosales.com.au/media/blfa_files/IMPERIAL_CABLE_DATA.pdf

    Single Phase Dol Starter

I was told at college that N is always used for the control circuit in a single phase DOL, but I can't remember the reason. Though if I remember correctly it does work out simpler for some reason.

PYRO.......question for Deke and eldest child only ( possibly)

ive got a datasheet for imperial MI somewhere, I'll dig it out later Ian's post it up here. I've also got a bunch of imperial MICC tools in the shed, I'll have to dig them out, I'm sure there is f, j and g size stuff

Poll for university. All help is much appreciated!!

If it is just second fix then the answer is going to be a few minutes for each, the switch socket and pendant are likely to take roughly the same amount of time. For an apprentice it can be expected to take longer, but they'll get quicker as they go along. for a person with no experience it...

    what is this called?

A small bussbar would do it.  Merlin gerin do a small unit which mounts on a din rail, or else din rail terminals with a linking bar.

    what is this called?

That looks more like a small bussbar than a spreader box. A spreader box would normally be an empty enclosure which you gland a cable into to allow you to spread the cores before they enter a DB or bussbar chamber, like the below picture . without knowing the details of the job it's hard to...

    Danger House!!! Please help

Assuming it is T&E or other sheathed cable the there is unlikely to be anything wrong with the surface clipping. the fact you can identify exactly where the cables are running for the lights suggests that their location is obvious. Are they connected to a 2 or 5 amp socket on alighting...

commando socket supplied in swa help

Do you use brass locknuts with them if they are on the inside? I was taught that the banjo should always be in brass - brass contact with the gland.

    Dual Feeder

Are you able to give a reference, or a point in the right direction, of where I could read up further on this?

    Odd light wiring

Be thankful it is only two switches which have died as a result of this, it could have been much worse. Yes employing the services of an electrician is a very good idea, and I'm sure he would appreciate you letting him know that there may be a switched neutral in the circuit.

    Dual Feeder

It's not the first time I've heard that, it's something my mentor told me when I was but a young apprentice. He never could give a good reason for it though, so after a long discussion we came to the conclusion he had been misinformed.

    Odd light wiring

My best guess would be that the neutral is being switched rather than the live, which is a potentially very dangerous situation.  What Exactly are you trying to do with this switch?

    Dual Feeder

Would that not be more to do with the exceptionally high fault currents available and the possible interconnections between LV and MV earths. Or was it to satisfy their requirements for a main bond, which the armour would almost certainly not be suitable for?

    Dual Feeder

Interesting, what influence did the DNO have over installations at the time? I don't suppose you've got any information relating to this?

    Dual Feeder

If you read that reg carefully you'll see it only applies where the separate cpc is required, but the argument I have heard on this is that it is not permitted elsewhere in the regulations.
  16. D

    Dual Feeder

Yes there are many arguments in each direction, what I've been struggling to establish for quite a long time is the actual technical facts of the matter.  Most of the arguments for an external cpc seem to revolve around non-technical reasons or flawed logic as far as I can tell.  But the...

    Dual Feeder

A secondary cpc? How much fault current will it actually see compared to the cable armour? Bearing in mind the armour would need to be able to handle the PFC anyway to fulfill its function.  I've heard many arguments to say that a 'secondary cpc' is wholly unnecessary and even one person  say...

    single switch to double

Safe isolation is a procedure to safeguard everybody who is isolating anything to work on it, not just testers. Unfortunately it has become like mirror signal manouver in that people seem to learn it as a set procedure and not actually think about what the need to isolate and how to prove it...

    single switch to double

Each thing needs to be considered in its own right and not balanced against another for the sake of justifying it.  Consider this case, the choice is do it yourself or pay probably £100 to have it done properly, is the cost worth the potential risk?  yes there are many other things than...

    single switch to double

I did not suggest that DIY should be made illegal, I pointed out that the advice given needs to be such that the diyer can carry out the job correctly and safely. What statistical rate of dying would you consider to be a concern? i am quite frankly appalled that you think the value of human...
