Socket for TV in middle of wall - is this allowed?

Thanks for the replies. The A/V side of things is sorted, I've used a custom face plate (which I made in the shed!) with HDMI, ethernet, aerial and satellite sockets. I just think that's a lot neater (although with hindsight nobody can actually see it anyway!). It was the electrical socket...

Socket for TV in middle of wall - is this allowed?

Hi everyone. I've just finished installing an HDMI distribution system in my house (so I can watch Sky in all rooms). In one of the bedrooms, I am planning on wall-mounting an LCD TV. I have routed aerial/HDMI/network cables to a self-made faceplate on the wall, and this will be hidden behind...

    Wires into consumer unit

Honestly, there's no way I'd touch anything on or near the CU.....I promise! Got an electrician coming on Friday to sort it out for me. I am just interested in knowing what's what before he comes, after I had a bad experience with a spark a few years ago.

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

You guys are great. Many thanks.

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

Ok, thanks for that. That is good. The cable is about 8m total from CU to last socket, and runs along/through the joists in the cellar. It doesn't touch any insulation. The last 2m ish is behind plaster and tiles. All the cable is 4mm. There are 3 double sockets plus combi boiler. I was...

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

Hi, measured one of the 7 strands and it's 0.034" (0.86mm). So, looking at the chart, looks like it can't be imperial. So.......what is it?? Is there a similar chart for post-imperial cables? :-)

    Wires into consumer unit

What about my concern over the polarity? I asked a few years ago for the Eco 7 teleswitch to be removed, but the supplier wouldn't do it.. I'm not on Eco 7 any more, just have to give day/night reads each month, but get charged the same for both.

    Wires into consumer unit

Hi all I have two consumer units next to each other. One is unused and has been switched off for a few years. It has the cables for the old storage heaters attached to it. When we had central heating put in, this consumer unit obviously became redundant. The 4 cables are, however still...

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

I will measure the cable once I have the right tool for the job. Thanks everyone.

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

But then surely the earth would be stranded?

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

You're right. I think I'm thinking like a typical amateur. Just wish one of you guys lived near me! Should be able to search for a sparky on experience as well as area! ?:|

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

I am really interested in retraining as an electrician. I just don't know how to go about it, being thirty-odd and working full time. Is it even worth it in todays economic climate?

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

The spark who initially looked at the cable was about 20 years old. It was obvious to me that he didn't know what it was. He actually made an excuse not to do the job. Do they still teach new sparks about retro cabling? Forums like this are obviously invaluable.......as with anything you...

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

Thanks guys. If it did turn out to be 4mm, would a 32a breaker be ok?

    Kitchen cable 4mm or Imperial?

Hi all, this is my first post so go easy on me! Now, this may be a really stupid question, but if I don't ask then it'll just bug me. I have recently been doing some general decorating in the kitchen and before I go too far, I want to have the wiring checked over. It looks pretty old to me...
