    Is a 70W light actually 70W?

Does a 70W 6ft fluorescent batten fitting actually 'consume' 70W, or is it just the lamp which 'consumes' 70W with extra losses to be accounted for in the control gear (ie additional losses in the choke etc)? Initial stages of looking at reducing energy bills for a warehouse. Old fluo battens...

High RCD Trip Time Despite Good EFLZ

Replaced an old Wylex fuseboard (BS3036 fuses) the other day. TNCS supply with Ze 0.14ohm. I was expecting fast rcd trip times on x1 and x5, but x1 are surprisingly high. Tried 0 and 180. Examples of some of the readings: Sockets (ring) Zs 0.28ohm, RCD 43ms@x1 and 22ms@x5. Sockets (radial)...

    Nice rewire

Some months ago, a bloke I know bought a house to rent out and had it 'completely' rewired. I went in just to change the intruder alarm panel and this is some of the stuff I saw (see pics). Bonding conductors not fixed to wall. Mains tails in stickyback trunking stuck onto peeling wallpaper...

2.5mm Radials - Existing Domestic Circuits

Hello people, Is it common to see a house with two radial circuits instead of rings, each circuit is backed up with 20A fuses, each circuit supplying around 5 sockets outlets, each circuit is a 2.5mm T&E radial? Kitchen is an extension, with it's own 2.5mm ring for socket outlets. It's a...

    Ouch. My knee.

I used to think padded-knee work trousers were just extravagant. I learned my lesson and won't work without knee pads ever again. Last week (Monday): Sinking sockets into a wall, kneeling on floorboards dusted with rubble. Wearing normal work/cargo trousers with no knee pads. Made my knees hurt...

Shower - Triton Marbella 9.5kW Replacement

I have a potential customer who needs a Triton Marbella 9.5kW shower replacing. I phoned Triton who recommend Model T80si as a like-for-like replacement. Anyone replaced one of these? Like-for-like sounds good to me as electric and water connections should be easy, but some online reviews of...

    Hi. First post.

Hi. My first post here. Looks like a friendly place. Hope I fit in nicely. :) Completed my City&Guilds 236 Courses back in early 90s. Worked on the tools for around 12 years in total. Why oh why didn't I realise my cup was already full. Guinness . I became a sales rep for electrical...
