Been asked by an elderly friend to put a 2 gang socket in her garage.  Im thinking of putting an rcd protected socket in there.

The present consumer unit i think original to the property (about 25 years old) is a  Square D QOE with those metal prongs and plastic clips on the back of the breakers.  the Main switch is 100ma and there is no 30ma protection anywhere. TNCS earthing.

Changing the consumer unit is out of the question, so apart from the issue of discrimination especially when testing the 30ma rcd at *5, is there any reason why i cant do this.

As far as I can see I am leaving the installation safer as they normally put an extension lead out of the window and only have 100ma protection at present.

you may need to protect the cable feeding your new socket,

how are you routing it?
At present there is SWA feeding a metal clad wylex 2way switch fuse in the garage.  So will probably just use a bit of conduit to run cable over to new socket.

Why not fit an RCBO in the board?

they are readily available in the right (cough cough) area

just saying...........
Ive had a look tonight on internet but dont really like buying old parts off fleabay especially at £30 plus

Is garage on its own circuit if so you could put that circuit on its own board in house then upgrade board in garage with RCD protection.

Well the ones that i have are brand new, never been fitted, never been used. Old stock which was kept for 2 specific customers that now no longer exist

just saying.....
Are you going to cough one up for me then Kerching?  I need a 32amp please?

Kerching, hope you havent looked yet as we are going for a garage consumer unit upgrade for the moment so she can have her garage sockets rcd protected and also get away from the 3036 fuse wire.

PS when did you get the new jimmy choo's?
